A 27-year-old Scottish postman has confessed to one of the most gruesome killings in recent memory — and even the court couldn’t hold back in its description of his actions.
Ewan Methven, who worked for the Royal Mail, pleaded guilty to the brutal murder of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Phoenix Spencer-Horn, at the High Court in Glasgow on June 17. Her mutilated body was found inside their shared apartment in East Kilbride in November 2024.
The details are disturbing.
According to prosecutors, Methven strangled Phoenix and stabbed her at least 20 times, delivering a fatal blow to her chest. He then attempted to decapitate her and dismember her body in a chilling effort to cover up the crime.
The two had met at a party two years earlier and had only recently moved in together. On the night of the murder, Methven allegedly texted Phoenix, saying he felt “lonely.” She was last heard from around 9:37 p.m. after telling her mother they were eating dinner together. Just a few hours later, a neighbor reported hearing a loud bang and hurried footsteps — activity that matched data from a fitness app recording steps around 12:13 a.m.
Two days later, Methven finally called emergency services, claiming he had suffered a psychotic break triggered by a mixture of cocaine, alcohol, and steroids. He told police he had blacked out and awoke to find Phoenix dead.
Police arrived to find Phoenix’s body in the hallway, along with two blood-soaked knives nearby. A third knife was found in the bathroom. Methven later told investigators, “I could not stay here with her like that. I tried to dismember her.”
Despite his claims of being drugged, a food delivery driver who interacted with him around 8 p.m. on the night of the murder testified that Methven appeared completely sober.
The case has stunned the community, with Phoenix remembered as a vibrant young woman whose life was taken in a moment of unthinkable violence. In court, Methven’s attorney admitted the horror of the crime could not be explained.
“Those related to Phoenix and those who are friends are likely to regard Ewan Methven as the personification of evil,” said defense attorney Tony Graham. “He understands the bereaved will seek an explanation, but he cannot provide one.”
Methven also admitted to attempting to obstruct justice and is set to be sentenced on July 14.
As the court prepares to deliver justice, Phoenix’s loved ones are left grappling with a loss that defies understanding — and a betrayal that feels almost unimaginable.
