A Minnesota lobbyist facing serious allegations of violent threats against the state Capitol is the focus of growing legal concerns.
The Daily Mail reported that Jonathan Michael Bohn, a public affairs director, stands accused of making felony threats following the recent violent attacks on Democratic state lawmakers.
Bohn, who has politically contributed to Democratic causes, allegedly threatened to carry a gun to the Capitol and harm individuals, resulting in legal action and enforced distance from government buildings.
Jonathan Michael Bohn, 41, currently serves as the public affairs director for the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO), which advocates for faculty at Minnesota’s state-run universities. His political contributions, including donations to Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, add another layer to the unfolding story.
Legal Proceedings for Threatening Messages
Bohn’s troubles began on Wednesday, when he was arrested for allegedly sending disturbing text messages that contained threats of violence.
These violent messages reportedly included intentions of shooting individuals at the Capitol, expressions that alarmed recipients and authorities alike.
On Friday, Bohn appeared in Carver County District Court, where the seriousness of the charges was apparent. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting Bohn expressed excitement about the possibility of using a gun at the Capitol, threatening harm to others.
A search of Bohn’s residence resulted in the discovery of a firearm, raising concerns about potential planning and intent. Authorities were alerted to the threats when a constituent of Rep. Jim Nash reported receiving them, leading to Bohn’s subsequent arrest and legal troubles.
During his court appearance, Bohn was visibly emotional as the judge set a substantial bond of $1 million and ordered him to stay away from the Capitol. Bohn was also ordered to refrain from contacting the person who reported the threats.
Bohn’s attorney, John Lesch, attempted to mitigate the situation by arguing that the defendant’s remarks stemmed from a heated political argument. Lesch claimed the messages did not indicate a real intention to cause harm, suggesting they were a reaction to political tensions.
The politically charged atmosphere around the time of the threats was heightened by recent tragic events. Bohn was reportedly angered by a derogatory post about his friends, Democrat Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed, and Sen. John Hoffman, who survived critical injuries after an attack targeting them.
Impact of Recent Violence and Political Tensions
The attacks on Hortman and her husband, who both lost their lives, and the injury of Sen. Hoffman have had a profound impact on the community. These events, connected to Vance Boelter, a Trump supporter charged with multiple crimes, further complicate the narrative surrounding Bohn’s remarks.
As a result of the allegations, Bohn has been placed on leave by the IFO to allow for a comprehensive investigation. Despite his respected status as a lobbyist, the organization insists on full cooperation with law enforcement.
IFO President Jenna Chernega expressed the association’s commitment to working with authorities. She emphasized the organization’s dedication to maintaining respectful and productive engagement despite the turmoil.
Beyond his legal troubles, Bohn’s history of political donations has garnered attention. Data from the Federal Election Commission reveals his contributions to Democratic initiatives, including the PAC ActBlue and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Despite the severity of the charges and his political connections, Bohn has continued to assert his stance against violence. He publicly condemned all forms of violence, acknowledging that his words had inadvertently led to a significant distraction.
