Amid a flurry of podcast appearances and hosting duties for her own show, former first lady Michelle Obama has been on something of a journey of self-discovery and revelation in recent months, taking fans and followers along for the ride.
On a recent episode of her IMO podcast, Mrs. Obama somewhat surprisingly expressed relief at the fact that she never had a son with her husband, former President Barack Obama, suggesting that the likely similarities between father and child would have been too much to bear, and she is glad to have escaped such a fate, as the Daily Caller reports.
Michelle holds forth
The installment of IMO at issue included Mrs. Obama’s co-host and brother, Craig Robinson, and special guest Angela “Angie” Martinez, a radio personality and ex-rapper.
Amid a discussion centered on parenting, Mrs. Obama stated that moms in general should endeavor to teach their male children resilience and instill a preparedness for hurt and disappointment.
“I know, I do that with my girls,” she said, referencing daughters Sasha and Malia, now grown and living independently on the West Coast.
Mrs. Obama continued, “Teach [a son] how to deal with a traffic stop, but also teach him about how to communicate in a marriage and be a listening father and to be a compassionate neighbor and to be a voting citizen – somebody who’s going to pay attention and care about something outside of himself.”
She went on, “And if you’re thinking about that human, then all these choices become a little more clear about what he needs as a grown man in the world.”
No boys allowed
It was then that Martinez threw a curveball into the mix, telling the former first lady, “You shoulda threw a boy in the mix,” suggesting that a male child would have been a lovely addition to the Obama brood.
Mrs. Obama took issue with the very concept, declaring, “I would — I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy, ’cause he would’ve been a Barack Obama.”
Martinez persisted in her line of thinking, saying, “Baby Barack, he would’ve been amazing.”
The former first lady countered, “No, I would’ve felt for him,” seeming to suggest that he would have carried traits of his father that she finds less than appealing.
Robinson deftly steered the conversation by noting that his sister simply “borrowed” his sons whenever she felt the need to connect with young males on a parental level.
Evident disdain?
Though fans of the former first lady would likely suggest that she was merely joking about not wanting to mother a child who bore similarities to her famous spouse, several prominent observers have opined that there is an undercurrent of disdain characterizing the former first couple’s relationship.
Podcaster Megyn Kelly is among those who have questioned the affection between the Obamas, recently saying of Michelle, “Every word she says about Barack Obama is negative. Every time she opines, it’s something that reflects poorly on him,” going on to conclude, “I think she and he married the wrong people.”
