ANDERSON, SC – A Juneteenth celebration turned tragic over the weekend when gunfire erupted, leaving ten people injured and one dead. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has identified a person of interest as the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
The incident unfolded Saturday night around 10 p.m. on Scarborough Road near a VFW post. Hundreds had gathered to commemorate the historic day when an argument in the parking lot escalated into a deadly shooting. La’Porsha Cobbs, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reverend Emmanuel Fleming, President of the Greenville NAACP and a local pastor, expressed deep sorrow and called for introspection. “It’s devastating to see violence overshadow moments meant for unity and celebration,” he said.
Fleming emphasized the importance of self-accountability and community love. “We need to stop harming each other and recognize our own value,” he urged. “Without self-respect, how can we expect others to respect us?”
The aftermath of the chaos was evident on Sunday, with personal belongings scattered across the area, a testament to the panic that ensued as people fled for safety.
Fleming called for leadership within the community to guide younger generations toward understanding the value of life and mutual respect. “It’s not about credentials; it’s about wisdom and guidance,” he noted.
The shooting has sparked a broader conversation about violence at community events. “We cannot ignore what happened,” Fleming asserted. “We must continue to fight for peace and unity.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice. The community is left to reflect on how to prevent such tragedies in the future.
