Former Ohio State Buckeyes standout Kirk Barton is facing serious legal trouble following a deadly crash in the early hours of Saturday, June 21.
Authorities say Barton, 40, was behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 Raptor driving at a “high rate of speed” when he slammed into a Lexus on U.S. 33/S.R. 161 in Dublin, Ohio. The crash claimed the life of 24-year-old Ethan Wence Perry, who was traveling eastbound on West Bridge Street. Perry died at the scene.
Barton, a resident of Lewis Center, reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at Riverside Methodist Hospital before being taken into custody. He has since been booked into the Franklin County Jail, where he is facing a felony charge of aggravated vehicular homicide.
Police shut down several major intersections following the crash, including West Bridge Street and North High Street. Traffic was rerouted for several hours before roads reopened around 10:15 a.m.
Court records confirm Barton is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday, June 23.
The Buckeye Scoop, a site affiliated with Ohio State athletics, acknowledged the tragedy in a statement posted to X: “We are heartbroken for Ethan Perry and his loved ones. This is a tragedy. At this time, we are gathering information and will have more to say when appropriate.”
Barton played for Ohio State from 2003 to 2007, starting at right tackle for four seasons and serving as team captain his senior year. He earned first-team All-American honors in 2007 and helped lead the Buckeyes to two national championship games. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft but bounced around various teams in the NFL before retiring.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, Barton has a history of traffic violations, raising further questions about what led up to the deadly crash.
