President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that a possible agreement between his administration and Harvard University could be announced within the coming week.
The statement comes after ongoing disputes between the Trump administration and the Ivy League institution over diversity programs and concerns about antisemitism on campus.
Trump commended Harvard for cooperating during discussions aimed at resolving what he described as “largescale improprieties.”
The president has taken steps to revoke federal funding from Harvard, citing its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and what he sees as inadequate action against antisemitism.
Tensions escalated earlier in June when Trump moved to restrict the enrollment of foreign students at Harvard.
The administration also began reviewing visa policies for international students as part of broader reforms, per the Daily Wire.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Many people have been asking what is going on with Harvard University and their largescale improprieties that we have been addressing, looking for a solution.”
He continued, “We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so.”
Trump also praised the university’s conduct during negotiations, stating, “They have acted extremely appropriately during these negotiations, and appear to be committed to doing what is right.”
He described the potential resolution as “mindbogglingly” historic and said it would be beneficial for the country if finalized. “If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country,” Trump wrote.
Harvard previously filed lawsuits against the Trump administration after losing over $2 billion in federal funding. The university also sued again to challenge the administration’s attempt to prohibit foreign student enrollment.
Shortly before Trump’s latest comments, a federal judge in Boston blocked the administration’s effort to prevent Harvard from enrolling foreign students, according to CBS News.
Last month, Trump suggested that Harvard cap international student enrollment at 15%, a sharp decrease from the nearly 30% currently enrolled. He emphasized a need for transparency regarding the students being admitted.
“We want to make sure that the foreign students are people that can love our country,” Trump said. He added, “We don’t want to see shopping centers exploding. We don’t want to see the kind of riots that you had.”
The Trump administration has focused on increasing scrutiny of foreign student applications as part of national security efforts. This includes closer monitoring of applicant backgrounds.
The State Department introduced updated screening measures on Wednesday. These measures involve checking social media accounts of student visa applicants for signs of anti-American sentiment or other security threats.
Screenings will look for “any indications of hostility towards the citizens, culture, government, institutions or founding principles of the United States,” the department said.
Additional checks include identifying support for terrorism, threats to national security, or advocacy for antisemitic violence or harassment.
In a statement, the State Department noted, “Every visa adjudication is a national security decision.” The agency emphasized the need to prevent individuals who may pose a risk from entering the country.
