The Trump administration has gone to war with Democrat governors over DEI, antisemitic practices, and immigration agendas.
The latest salvo was fired at Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
The DOJ filed suit against him for offering reduced in-state tuition at colleges for illegal immigrants.
Can’t do that
Kentucky is a very politically confusing state.
It keeps electing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to office, despite his approval rating being in the tank, while also electing Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a fiscal hawk.
Yet, the residents of the state also elected a Democrat as their governor.
Generally speaking, the Senate usually gives a solid representation of where voters stand overall, but that is far from the case in Kentucky.
Beshear has installed some far-left programs, which now include discounted tuition for illegal immigrants.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is now trying to block that program.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “No state can be allowed to treat Americans like second-class citizens in their own country by offering financial benefits to illegal aliens.”
She went on, “The Department of Justice just won on this exact issue in Texas, and we look forward to fighting in Kentucky to protect the rights of American citizens.”
The lawsuit filed was much along those lines, stating, “Federal law prohibits aliens not lawfully present in the United States from getting in-state tuition benefits that are denied to out-of-state U.S. citizens. There are no exceptions.”
It continued, “Yet Kentucky regulation, expressly and directly conflicts with federal immigration law because it enables an ‘undocumented alien’ present in the United States to qualify for reduced tuition at public state colleges while requiring U.S. citizens from other states to pay higher tuition rates.”
The Trump administration is at war over these types of policies, trying to block federal funding for sanctuary cities and states, but Trump has been defeated at almost every level in the courts.
While I agree with the administration on this, unfortunately, current laws forbid the government from holding back funding after it has been approved by Congress and signed off on by a sitting president.
This issue has been litigated to death, yet Trump keeps making these threats, he keeps getting sued, and the administration continues to lose these lawsuits.
What we need is the Supreme Court to once and for all decide on the legality of sanctuary cities. When you consider that immigration has clearly been dropped into the purview of the federal government, I don’t see how their laws stand up.
