Mark Cuban has revealed that former Vice President Kamala Harris considered him as a potential running mate during her 2024 presidential campaign.
However, Cuban declined the offer, stating he would not be a good fit for the role.
The entrepreneur and former “Shark Tank” judge shared the revelation during a preview of “The Bulwark” podcast.
Host Tim Miller pressed Cuban about rumors circulating backstage at MSNBC, prompting the businessman to confirm the story.
Cuban said that Harris’s campaign team contacted him and requested that he submit vetting materials as part of the vice-presidential selection process. He ultimately declined to proceed, believing it would not be worth the effort.
He explained his reasoning by saying he did not see himself excelling as a second-in-command. “My response was I’m not very good as the number two person,” Cuban told Miller in the clip.
Cuban added that he didn’t believe his personality or style would mesh well with the demands of a political running mate. “The last thing we need is me telling Kamala, you know, the president, that, no, that’s a dumb idea,” he said.
He also expressed discomfort with traditional campaign duties such as public appearances, the New York Post reported.
“I’m not real good at the shaking hands and kissing babies,” Cuban added.
Harris ultimately selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Despite the loss in the general election, Miller suggested that Cuban could have been a stronger and more distinctive choice.
Cuban acknowledged that his inclusion would have made for a very different campaign, though not necessarily a better one. “My personality is completely different than Tim’s,” he said. “My experiences, my backgrounds are completely different.”
He noted that he tends to speak more directly than career politicians. “I think I’ve cut through the sh– more directly. I’m not a politician,” Cuban said. “And so, it would have been different, but it would have been awful.”
Cuban joked that had Harris selected him, she likely would have dismissed him within a week. “She would have fired me in six days,” he said.
Miller continued the discussion by saying that Cuban’s presence on the ticket might have been an improvement over the current administration. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance defeated Harris and Walz in the 2024 election.
Cuban responded that, despite the outcome, he believed Harris had a real shot at winning. “I really thought she was going to win,” he said.
During the campaign, Cuban had been an active surrogate for Harris. He sparked controversy after criticizing Trump’s leadership team, saying the former president didn’t work with “strong, intelligent women” during an appearance on “The View.”
After the election, Cuban attempted to walk back his comments. He offered a public congratulations to President Trump and acknowledged his victory as legitimate.
Cuban’s remarks on the podcast provide new insight into the internal dynamics of Harris’s 2024 campaign.
The full episode is scheduled to air on Friday.
