A Florida man is facing a possible 30-year prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of letting his 87-year-old grandmother die in horrific conditions—starving, dehydrated, and covered in bedsores crawling with insects.
Allen G. Arias, 47, was convicted Tuesday in Brevard County of aggravated manslaughter of an elderly person for the 2019 death of Anita Arias, whom he served as a legal caregiver.
Jurors took 17 hours to reach their verdict, weighing gruesome evidence of neglect and shocking testimony about the woman’s final days. Prosecutors said Allen brought his grandmother to Holmes Regional Medical Center back in 2019, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. But what doctors found was so disturbing they immediately called police.
Anita was reportedly covered in infected bedsores, some infested with live maggots and other insects. According to court records, the ulcers were spread across her back, legs, and feet. Officers later searched the Melbourne home the two shared and found it in squalid condition, with particularly filthy surroundings in Anita’s bedroom.
Inside the house, investigators also discovered a stockpile of diabetes medication prescribed to Anita—but none of it had been given to her.
Autopsy findings revealed she died from a combination of dehydration, emaciation, sepsis, and dangerously high blood sugar. Prosecutors argued that Arias—who admitted he was her caregiver and knew she was diabetic and had limited mobility—did nothing to help her.
Jurors were shown graphic photos of her wounds during trial.
The defense painted Anita as a stubborn woman who hoarded belongings and frequently refused to eat, take her medication, or go to the doctor. But the jury didn’t buy it.
“It’s unfair to say she died the way she lived,” Assistant State Attorney Tiffany Colon said after the verdict. “Elderly people might be set in their ways, but you still need to do what you need to do to take care of them—or you need to ask for help.”
Colon added she was relieved Anita had finally received justice, “even though she wasn’t here to see it.”
Arias is currently being held in Brevard County Jail while he awaits sentencing on August 20. He faces up to 30 years in state prison and a $10,000 fine.
