Welcome to the 54th annual National Right to Life Conference! And thank you for being here! Thank you to Kansans for Life for you have done to help make this weekend a success.
You probably remember reading, or seeing the animated tv show, “Horton Hears a Who.” Horton, a lovable elephant, hears a voice coming from a speck of dust and finds out there is a little village of Who’s living in Whoville on that speck. He decides to protect the Whos and faces criticism from the other animals. So much so that the others decide to destroy that speck of dust.
Horton tells the Whos they have to make some noise; they have to be heard. The mayor of Whoville goes around telling everyone to make as much noise as possible. The Whos are shouting and banging pots and pans, but they are still not heard.
Finally, the mayor finds little Jo-Jo who is playing with his yo-yo. He tells Jo-Jo to shout and he does– he yells “Yopp.” I have no idea what that means but it made a difference. That additional voice made enough noise that the other animals finally heard and realized there were indeed people living on that speck.

We all love that story because of a famous line, “A person’s a person no matter how small.” But it also points out the value of each and every voice.
Our conference theme is “Every Voice Matters.” Your voice matters
Some of you have a special affinity for the babies who need protecting. Others have a heart for the mothers who may think abortion is the best, or the only, option. Some of you are drawn to those with disabilities, or the elderly, and you want to make sure they don’t think assisted suicide is their best or only option. And many of you want to do it all because you care about all equally.
There are many ways to make a difference. Some of you are natural teachers or researchers. You want to educate your community about the humanity of the unborn child, and the dangers of the abortion pill.
Others love the political and legislative angle. You want to elect pro-life candidates so they will pass laws to protect innocent, vulnerable life.
Some of you have that maternal instinct that just wants to help young women through what may be a very difficult, scary time in their lives when they find out they are pregnant and aren’t sure what to do.
Never underestimate the influence you have in your home, in your community, in your state and in your country.
Collectively, our voices become a chorus that makes beautiful music. But your voice may be the solo that reaches deep down into someone’s soul, letting them know that you care about them, that their life matters.
Len, your voice matters. Anna, your voice matters. Nick…, Sally…, your voice matter.”
One “Yopp” saved a village. We need every one of your voices to save a country. We need to show this great land of ours that every person, from the preborn child and his or her mother, to the elderly or infirm, is worthy of support and protection.
I hope and pray you absorb information and inspiration from our presenters at this conference so that, when you leave, you are even more excited and emboldened to shout out, “Yopp.”
