Multiple people are feared dead after a horrific rockslide at Canada’s Banff National Park was triggered while up to 20 hikers were nearby.
One person has been confirmed dead, while three others were injured as rescuers continue to search for survivors at the site of the rockfall near Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.
The deadly landslide took place at around 1:30pm on Thursday and ‘multiple hikers’ were caught in it, said the Lake Louise Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Friends identified the deceased as Jutta Hinrichs, a retired clinical educator in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alberta.
Hinrichs’ friends told Global News that she had just returned to Canada from Peru last Friday, describing her ‘a beautiful, caring soul with a huge smile and love of people and nature.’
One of Hinrichs’ colleagues, Masako Miyazaki, posted on Facebook announcing her passing and said ‘her loss is a profound one for our community.’
Miyazaki, another occupational therapy professor at the University of Alberta, described Hinrich as ‘kind, compassionate, and deeply nurturing.’
