President Donald Trump delivered a sharp response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to mediate the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran during a White House event Wednesday.
Trump revealed details of his Tuesday conversation with Putin, describing how he redirected the Russian leader’s attention to his own military situation.
The exchange highlighted ongoing tensions between the two world powers as multiple international conflicts continue to unfold.
It also comes just after Russia delivered a sharp warning to the United States against providing military support to Israel’s ongoing bombing campaign against Iran.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that direct U.S. military assistance to Israel could destabilize the Middle East situation, Resist the Mainstream reported Wednesday.
The American president told reporters that Putin had volunteered to serve as a mediator in the Israel-Iran dispute.
Trump’s response was direct and pointed toward Russia’s ongoing military involvement in Ukraine.
“He actually offered to help mediate, I said, ‘Do me a favor, mediate your own. Let’s mediate Russia first, okay?’” Trump stated during the White House gathering.
Trump elaborated on his message to the Russian president, emphasizing priorities.
“I said ‘Vladimir, let’s mediate Russia first, you can worry about this later,’” he explained to the assembled reporters.
Putin confirmed his willingness to assist with Israel-Iran mediation during his own press conference Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
The Russian president outlined his government’s potential role in brokering an agreement between the two Middle Eastern nations.
The Russian leader indicated that Moscow could facilitate discussions aimed at allowing Iran to maintain a civilian nuclear program while addressing Israeli security concerns.
Putin’s comments came as tensions between Israel and Iran continue to escalate across the region.
The Kremlin had previously announced its readiness to mediate between the warring countries on Monday, per Reuters.
Russian officials emphasized their commitment to addressing what they described as the root causes of the crisis.
“Russia remains ready to do everything necessary to eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declared.
The spokesman acknowledged the severity of the current situation and its broader implications.
Peskov warned about the deteriorating conditions in the region.
“But the situation is escalating more than seriously, and, of course, this is not affecting the situation for the better,” he stated.
Trump had previously expressed openness to Putin’s mediation efforts during a Sunday interview with ABC News.
The president indicated that he had received a direct call from Putin regarding the matter.
“I would be open to it. [Putin] is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,” Trump said during the television interview.
The president emphasized that their conversation focused heavily on the Israel-Iran conflict rather than Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine.
Trump suggested that resolving the Middle Eastern crisis took priority in their discussion.
