On this day (June 18) in 1940, UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered his speech on the incredible evacuation of British and French troops from Dunkirk, a speech in which he urged his fellow countrymen: “Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’”
And we do call WWII their finest hour—a shining example of British courage and determination, as it was also of American courage and determination. If only we had the bravery of the “Greatest Generation.” What will our legacy be?
