Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lead over state Assembly member Zohran Mamdani in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary race has shrunk to 11%, which is the same amount as undecided voters, according to a new poll.
The primary election, which is being conducted by ranked-choice voting, is on June 24. For ranked-choice voting, voters will rank up to five candidates by order of preference on their ballots. Early voting for the election started over the weekend.
Cuomo has consistently been the frontrunner in the race, and was ranked as the first choice by 38% of likely Democratic primary election voters, per the Marist Institute for Public Opinion’s June poll, New York Daily News reported.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who represents western Queens, was ranked as the first choice by 27% of the survey respondents, making the gap between him and Cuomo 11%. The poll also found that 11% of voters remain undecided.
Last month’s poll by Marist shows that Cuomo had a 19% lead over Mamdani, with 17% undecided.
