Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson made a resolute statement on reparations during Monday’s Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony in Daley Plaza, linking the historical fight for emancipation to contemporary issues of racial justice.
The event became a platform for Johnson to reiterate his administration’s dedication to combatting President Donald Trump, whose administration he compared to the Confederacy.
“The Confederacy is certainly alive, and we can feel and see the pulse of the Confederacy manifest in the Donald Trump administration,” Johnson said.
The mayor’s stance comes at a time when his administration is under scrutiny from the Department of Justice, which is investigating alleged race-based hiring practices. This investigation, initiated by the Trump administration, is probing whether Johnson’s policies discriminate against white job candidates.
“We need to be reminded as Blacks here in Chicago and America, remembering our past and working towards a more just future. Investing in Black is not a criminal act,” Johnson added.
