(NewsNation) — The inspiration for President Trump’s planned “Golden Dome” has long protected Israel from foreign air attacks.
Israel’s Iron Dome, established in 2011, uses radar to detect missiles and attempts to destroy them with Israeli missiles.
Per Israel’s Ministry of Defense, it is capable of handling multiple rockets simultaneously. The Iron Dome is the most famous of Israel’s missile shields.
Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, the Iron Dome performed its first interception of a rocket from Gaza in April 2011.
Since, it has intercepted more than 5,000 rockets and has a success rate of greater than 90%, per Rafael. It intercepts short-range rockets, specifically between 2 1/2 and 43 miles away.
The Iron Dome uses multimission radar to detect a rocket’s route. The system’s command and control center analyzes the rocket’s trajectory and its estimated landing area, according to Israel’s Ministry of Defense.
Then, Israel’s missile is launched and it explodes near the incoming rocket with the hope of destroying it.
