In my opinion, former Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) is one of the most corrupt politicians of our time.
He slithered his way out of criminal charges on multiple occasions, but he was finally taken down in what was an open-and-shut case of bribery.
Menendez had hoped to remain a free man while an appeal in his most recent case played out, but the court has rejected his bail motion, and he will remain behind bars.
You are corrupt!
As I have noted in other reports, I grew up in the area of the country he served, so I am very familiar with Menendez and all his little schemes.
I was stunned the first time he was brought up on corruption charges that he not only beat the case, but he also managed to get re-elected in the midst of all the publicity.
This time was different, however, as the case was extremely strong, with authorities finding stacks of evidence, including gold bars, in Menendez’s home.
The former senator was hoping that he could remain a free man while his appeals process played out, but the court did not agree with his motion.
Menendez took a page out of Donald Trump’s playbook, claiming that his prosecution was politically motivated, only his party was in charge when he was taken down.
He stated, “Prosecutors broke the law to make sure they convicted me, by loading unconstitutional evidence onto a laptop they gave to the jury. The illegal evidence, that the Judge had ruled inadmissible, violated the Congressional immunity clause of the Constitution.”
He continued, “The SDNY prosecutors effort to uphold the conviction, in the appeals court, is an effort to reduce Constitutional immunity for government actors. These are precisely the same laws relating to presidential immunity that came up in DJT’s case. This is a threat to Presidential immunity.”
The problem with his argument is that even members of Congress are required to follow the law, and accepting bribes on the part of foreign actors does not represent any aspect of his job as a U.S. senator representing the state of New Jersey.
If you want my two cents, this is nothing more than Menendez working Trump in the hopes of receiving a pardon for his actions.
As a matter of fact, Menendez and his allies are openly pleading with Trump for a pardon, something that Trump has not ruled out.
Based on Trump’s history of pardoning corrupt political officials, both Democrat and Republican, I would say there is a better than 50-50 shot that Menendez’s little game will work.
