Federal officials have announced a major arrest tied to the ongoing anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, which have continued for six consecutive days.
The Trump administration has intensified efforts to control the unrest through multiple enforcement actions.
Footage broadcast by FOX LA on Monday showed a truck unloading and distributing equipment to protesters. Among the items seen were professional-grade riot protection gear, notably advanced face shields.
Reporter Elex Michaelson identified the shields being handed out as Uvex Bionic Face Shields. These are typically used by workers in fields such as machining and autobody repair for protection from hazards like chemical splashes.
In this case, demonstrators reportedly used the shields to guard against police-deployed crowd control measures, complicating efforts by authorities to clear protest zones and restore public order.
Journalist Andy Ngo reported that a website had been launched by left-wing activists to raise funds for riot gear, which was then allegedly sent to demonstrators supporting open borders in the Los Angeles area.
On Friday, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who represents the Central District of California, revealed that Alejandro Theodoro Orellana was arrested by the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. Orellana now faces a federal charge of Conspiracy to Commit Civil Disorder.
Authorities allege that Orellana was involved in the distribution of protective gear to protesters.
The criminal charge was filed under 18 U.S. Code § 371, which pertains to conspiracy offenses against the U.S., according to the Conservative Brief.
Orellana is suspected of being affiliated with the Brown Berets, a group described in federal documents as a radical Latino paramilitary organization with a presence in several American cities.
Joshua Steinman, a former National Security Council official during Trump’s first term, suggested to the Daily Caller that Orellana’s presence is emblematic of foreign-backed operatives who, in his view, entered the country under President Biden’s border policies.
In a separate development, President Donald Trump responded to a legal ruling that allowed him to continue using the California National Guard in Los Angeles. He praised the appeals court decision on his Truth Social platform.
Trump stated that without the military’s presence, Los Angeles would be “burning to the ground,” and credited the court decision with preserving safety and stability in the city.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay on a prior ruling from U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, who had declared Trump’s deployment of the National Guard unconstitutional.
Judge Breyer found that Trump’s federalization of the Guard exceeded his authority and violated the 10th Amendment. He ordered control of the Guard to be returned to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by the state of California against Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Department of Defense. The lawsuit aimed to limit federal use of the National Guard within state boundaries.
California’s legal challenge asserted that the Guard’s role should be restricted to the protection of federal buildings and personnel, not broader riot response operations.
The state also argued that the president should not be able to deploy military forces in California without consulting or obtaining consent from the state’s governor.
