The affected site, Climate.gov, is run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and has been a prominent source for climate-related maps, educational articles, and data tools. However, despite its reputation as a reliable science communication platform, critics argue the site often reflected federal policy narratives rather than maintaining strict objectivity. The looming government climate website shutdown now raises questions about whether it will be repurposed—or simply abandoned.
Critics Point to Political Motives
Former site manager Rebecca Lindsey told The Guardian that her termination came despite strong performance reviews and that the firings were politically motivated. “It does seem to be part of a quiet effort to prevent agencies from informing the public about climate,” she said. Tom Di Liberto, a former NOAA spokesperson who was also let go, added: “They only fired the climate content team—that sends a clear signal.”
What Happens Next?
While some prescheduled content may still appear through June, there is currently no plan in place for future updates. Without a staffed editorial team, the government climate website shutdown appears imminent. Whether the platform will be quietly dismantled or transformed into a partisan outlet remains uncertain.
