Liberalism holds that humanity evolves with ever more expressive manifestations of freedom. Once in motion, this process cannot be reversed. At best, the more conservative elements of society can resist and slow down the advance.
However, this liberal narrative is false. History is not fated to go in a specific direction. Every human being has free will, which can often be fickle. Historical processes that seem irreversible can suddenly be turned around. The abortion debate is one example of how “settled law” became unsettled fifty years later.
Mobilizing Against Obergefell
This turnaround is now happening with same-sex “marriage” in the United States. A decade after the Supreme Court’s infamous Obergefell v. Hodges ruling imposed same-sex “marriage” on America, many people are changing their minds. Churches and state legislatures are mobilizing to overturn the decision. The issue is far from settled.

At first glance, the statistics are not that impressive. A recent Gallup poll indicates that a troubling 68 percent of all Americans support the aberration, down from a high of 71 percent in 2023.
Indeed, the evidence seems to support the liberal narrative that the normal trend for cases like this is for all demographics to edge upward over time. In this case, conservatives would lag ten or fifteen points behind liberals. Allowing for some variations, the result would eventually lead to a broad consensus of acceptance and normalization.
A Good Polarization
However, this is not what is happening in America today. A good polarization is taking place around this issue as the nation witnesses a growing rejection of this caricature of marriage among conservative Americans.
Over the last three years, support has decreased in some critical demographic groups. Gallup’s May 1-18 Values and Beliefs poll reports on the growing and dramatic partisan divide that tells the real story.
Why America Must Reject Isolationism and Its Dangers
To no one’s surprise, Democrats’ support has risen to an all-time high of 88 percent. In addition, Independents register a steady 76 percent support.
However, among Republicans, and they are a good chunk of America, acceptance that once peaked at 55 percent has fallen to 41 percent, the lowest since the June 26, 2015 Supreme Court decision. Where Republican support once trailed in parallel behind the Democrats, the two now point in opposite directions with a 47 percent gap between them, the largest ever—and it appears to be growing.
Opinions on Same-Sex Relations
A similar gap is found among Americans who consider homosexual relations as morally acceptable. Overall support in favor is stagnant at 64 percent, down from a high of 71 percent in 2022.
This result is skewed by a record high of 86 percent of Democrats approving such relations and steady support from Independents. Meanwhile, Republican support has declined to 38 percent, down from the high reading of 56 percent in 2022. That gap stands at 48 percentage points.

A final category worthy of note is those who attend religious services at least weekly, a demographic that leans heavily Republican. The poll showed that only one-third of the frequent churchgoers support same-sex “marriage”, and some 24 percent consider homosexual relations to be morally acceptable.
Mobilizing for Overturning Obergefell
The Gallup pollsters conclude that the last three years have seen a significant decline in support for same-sex behavior and “marriage” among Republican and religious Americans.
The report also warned that “the widening political divide suggests potential vulnerabilities” in Obergefell and similar decisions. The Supreme Court might revisit the ruling in the same way it reconsidered and overturned Roe v. Wade.
Such conclusions are not idle speculation. Drawing on Christian principles, Republican state lawmakers in Michigan, Montana, and South Dakota have begun introducing non-binding resolutions that call on the Supreme Court to reverse Obergefell. They partially passed resolutions in Idaho and North Dakota.

Plans to expand such efforts are based on the growing momentum and support of these resolutions at the state level. Conservatives are also now considering legal strategies to undermine the Obergefell ruling, similar to those that led to the overturning of Roe.
Reflecting the efforts of evangelicals nationwide, the Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, has just passed a resolution calling for the overturn not just of Obergefell but any laws and policies “that defy God’s design for marriage and family.”
Defying the Myth
Such long-term strategies recognize that morality does not change according to the whims of court justices or liberal politicians. Morality is based on human nature, which does not change.
One big obstacle is overcoming the myth that declares Christian morality outdated and irrelevant.
How Panera’s Socialist Bread Ruined Company
Catholic thinker and man of action Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira masterfully answered this objection by saying that whenever revolutionaries promote something that is “modern” and consistent with the times, caution must be taken:
“All too often, it is rubbish from some pagan time that it wishes to restore. What is new, for example, about divorce, nudism, tyranny or demagoguery, all of which were so widespread in the ancient world? And why is the advocate of divorce regarded as modern while the defender of indissoluble marriage is considered outdated?”
Indeed, he continues, this “concept of ‘modern’ amounts to everything that gives free rein to pride and egalitarianism as well as to pleasure-seeking and liberalism.”
Christians Must Not Back Down
The evidence is clear. The more religious a person is the greater their support for God’s marriage between one man and one woman. This topic must be preached from the pulpits.
What Does Saint Thomas Aquinas Say About Marriage?
A plan of action for those who support Christian morality is also clear. Taking a strong stand for traditional marriage will attract the growing number of Americans who hold this position.
Shying away from the issue based on the myth that same-sex “marriage” is irreversible or out of date is a losing strategy that only contributes to the moral decline of the nation.
