USA Gymnastics (USAG) is reportedly reevaluating its transgender inclusion policy following the Biden-to-Trump Title IX transition and amid escalating public tension surrounding the fairness of biological males competing in women’s sports. The reassessment comes just days after Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles publicly criticized women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines, igniting a national firestorm.
Since 2020, USAG allowed biological males identifying as women to compete in female categories under relaxed guidelines—having removed previous requirements for gender reassignment documentation. However, USAG recently deleted that policy from its website. When asked why, the organization cited legal compliance concerns after President Donald Trump reinstated protections for women’s sports by clarifying Title IX to exclude males from female competition categories.
“In May, USAG removed its policy to assess compliance with the current legal landscape,” the organization told Fox News.
Biles inserted herself into the debate last week with a strongly worded rebuke of Gaines. In response to Gaines’ critique of a transgender pitcher dominating a Minnesota girls’ team, Biles posted on X that Gaines was a “sore loser” and a “bully.”
“You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race,” Biles wrote. “Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them. One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!”
The backlash was swift. Critics pointed out that Biles, now retired, would never have to compete against a biological male. She also faced criticism for body-shaming Gaines in a follow-up post, drawing widespread condemnation from fans and women’s advocates.
On Tuesday, Biles issued an apology—not for her stance, but for the personal nature of her remarks. “These are sensitive, complicated issues… and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley,” she wrote. “I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition.”
Despite the softened tone, Biles doubled down on her support for transgender inclusion and expressed skepticism about the current sports system’s ability to balance fairness and inclusivity.
Riley Gaines accepted the apology but used the opportunity to reiterate her central argument: that competition by nature is exclusive, and allowing biological males into female categories nullifies that foundational fairness.
“Sports ARE inclusive by nature. Anyone can and everyone SHOULD play sports. Competition, on the other hand… is exclusive,” Gaines responded.
She went on to call out systemic failure among policymakers and reaffirmed her support for Donald Trump’s Executive Order defending women’s sports. “I didn’t see you there,” she said to Biles. “Little girls deserve the same shot to achieve that you had.”
