It would seem that the Trump administration has pulled the immigration rug out from under the Democrats.
When Kilmar Abrego Garcia was picked up by ICE agents and deported to El Salvador, Democrats and the leftist establishment went bonkers. They flooded the media with a narrative of a hardworking family man, who never committed a crime, being grabbed off the streets and deported without justification. It was nothing less than an all-out sympathy campaign for Abrego Garcia as a means to make Trump and his administration look bad.
Federal courts weighed in. Democrat leaders travelled to El Salvador in a show of solidarity with Abrego Garcia. Maryland Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen participated in a widely promoted tête-à-tête over drinks with the prisoner. The common demand was for Abrego Garcia to be brought back to America and reunited with his wife and children.
Democrats changed their tune a wee bit when more of Abrego Garcia’s personal history was revealed – the two protective orders sought by his wife and his suspicious activity when stopped by Tennessee state troopers in the company of a known human trafficker and three others traveling cross country without luggage.
Democrats still insisted the deportation was unlawful and Abrego Garcia had been denied due process. Actually, he had appeared in immigration courts on at least two occasions. One of the judges determined that Abrego Garcia was, indeed, a member of MS 13 – a fact testified to by an informant. He was ordered to be deported, but not to his home country of El Salvador. That is where the Trump administration erred. He was sent to a prison in El Salvador.
Weeell … Abrego Garcia is back – but not to his family in Maryland. Instead, he is in a federal prison. He was released from El Salvador based on an arrest warrant after a grand jury indicted him on gang-related and human trafficking charges.
The case is far worse than the reported accusations that circulated at the time of his deportation. The Justice Department is accusing Abrego Garcia of nine years of human trafficking of men, women and children – including members of MS 13. Also, accused of firearms and narcotics trafficking, soliciting explicit sexual images from a minor, and potential involvement in the murder of a rival gang member’s mother.
Those who championed his cause are now claiming that they were never in support of Abrego Garcia, the man, but only called for due process. They are glossing over all those lies they told about him. Their defense was all about the man. Having punched that tar baby, they are now stuck with him.
In their zeal to attack Trump’s immigration policies, they kicked the facts and the rule-of-law to the curb. They spread a fairy tale narrative that they had to know was untrue. And now they are dining on crow with more than a little egg on their faces.
This is just another example of the Democrats’ rejection of the rule-of-law when it comes to immigration. When they were in charge, they allowed tens of millions of migrants to enter America illegally by not securing the border and by providing a range of incentives – jobs, schooling, housing, sanctuary and cash.
Now that Trump has done in days what the Biden administration refused to do for years — secure the border and end mass illegal crossings – Democrats are fighting every effort to deport those who crossed the border illegally in the past and who are not eligible for asylum (approximately 85 percent of the illegal border crossers). AND even those who are dangerous criminals, such as Abrego Garcia. Democrats have no interest in deporting anyone because it was their policy to allow them in in the first place.
Democrats argue that illegal aliens who have not committed crimes should be insulated from deportation. Not so. A criminal record is not necessary. Deportations are justified if the person entered illegally. If they are ineligible for asylum as determined by an immigration court. If they have overstayed a visa. If they fail to appear for their hearing in an immigration court. The hundreds of thousands of got-aways are automatically eligible for deportation. Others are deemed to be undesirables for a number of reasons based on personal behavior. The idea that illegal migrants can only be deported for adjudicated criminal offenses is nonsense – a cynical attempt by Democrats to fool the American people.
Democrats are aggressively using the courts to prevent deportation. It is not a problem finding one left-wing activist federal judge among the more than 700 to impose injunctions. We should not forget that the hundreds of cases currently in the courts have been filed by partisan Trump-hating Democrats or individuals and organizations closely aligned to the Democratic Party.
The fight against deportation and the rule-of-law provides no better example of the Democrats’ desire to flood America with illegal aliens — and the reasons are obvious. They believe that the millions of migrants will strengthen their party through political activism and eventual votes – and will tilt the census numbers to give blue states greater representation in Congress. Democrats also seem to believe (erroneously, in my judgment) that allowing mostly Hispanic migrants to flow into America will win favor from the resident Hispanic American community. If you disagree with the reason I propose, tell me another reason why Democrats opened the borders and now resist deportation.
In the meantime, Abrego Garcia will now go through the criminal process as Democrat leaders pretend that they never heard of the guy. And he is still deportable according to the immigration courts, regardless of the outcome of any criminal trial. But at least the Trump administration is keeping him off the streets until he is incarcerated — and eventually deported permanently.
So, there ‘tis.
