Fort “Liberty” in North Carolina was renamed back to Fort Bragg by President Trump in February. Originally named after Braxton Bragg, a U.S. Army officer and later a Confederate general, Fort Bragg was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 following a congressional mandate to remove Confederate names from military bases.
Under the Biden presidency, the change was part of a woke Democratic effort to rebrand sites honoring Confederate figures. However, on February 10, 2025, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the base to be renamed Fort Bragg once again – this time to honor Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
In a recent statement, the Army said it would “take immediate action” to restore the old names of the bases originally honoring Confederates, but the base names would instead honor other American soldiers with similar names and initials.
At a recent speech at Fort Bragg ahead of the big military parade to honor the Army, Trump boasted, “This week, we honor 250 years of valor and glory and triumph by the greatest fighting force ever to walk the face of the earth, the United States Army. For two and a half centuries, our soldiers have marched into the raging fires of battle and obliterated America’s enemies, there’s never been anything like it.”
Trump added that he had some breaking news that he would be “restoring the names to Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill, and Fort Robert E. Lee.” He went on to say, “We won a lot of battles out of those forts. It’s no time to change. And I’m superstitious, you know, I like to keep it going, right. I’m very superstitious, we want to keep it going. So, that’s a big story. We just announced that today to you for the first time.”
The Trump Administration has also initiated plans to rename several U.S. Navy ships, particularly those named after civil rights leaders, as part of an effort to align with what they describe as a warrior culture. The most prominent example is the USNS Harvey Milk, a John Lewis-class replenishment oiler named after the gay rights activist and Navy veteran whose legacy has been clouded by allegations of inappropriate relationships with underage individuals.
In true Trump fashion, the renaming of things isn’t just about nostalgia – it’s about symbolism and getting rid of the woke crap that the Democrats thrust upon us. By swapping out activists for warfighters and replanting the stars and stripes over once “cancelled” forts, Trump is signaling a return to military tradition and greatness and ending Biden’s era of virtue signaling.
