Gas tax hearing. Strike bill fails. LA riots to hit Oregon.

Three important news items:

#1. The massive 11-tax transportation package has two more hearings this week.   Joint Committee On Transportation Reinvestment Wednesday (6/11) and Thursday (6/12) 4:00 PM, HR F. You can submit online testimony here. Here are the details:

• Gas tax increase +37%. 40 cents to 55 cents.
• Gas tax indexed to inflation forever
• Wage tax 300% increase! The transit payroll tax raises from .1% to .3%
• DMV fee #1 + 162%. car registration $43 to $113
• DMV fee #2 + 146%. drivers test $45 to $111
• DMV fee #3 + 175%. License plate $12 to $33
• Transfer tax on new cars. 2%.
• Creates new tax on used cars at 1%
• Vehicle privilege tax +200%: Current .5% tax on new cars now increases  to 1%.
• Road use charge for Electric Vehicles
• Road Use charge for delivery vehicles 10 or more

#2. The bill to pay people to go on strike has suddenly failed.  SB 916 passed the Senate and the House with changes, and upon a second Senate vote failed by two votes.   The bill would be the first in the nation to give jobless benefits to people who bail on work to strike against their employers.  The Oregonian Editorial Board did three different Editorials blasting the bill.

The Oregonian reports, “A bill that would provide unemployment benefits for striking workers in Oregon hit a snag on its path to approval Tuesday morning.The bill has already been okayed by both the Oregon House and Senate. However, the House made some tweaks after the Senate approved it, so Senate Bill 916 had to again earn a yes vote from the Senate in order to proceed to Gov. Tina Kotek’s desk. It didn’t.The attempt to approve House changes failed by two votes. Gladstone Democrat Mark Meek, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, voted no on the bill, though he’d supported the measure when it first came through the chamber in March. Courtney Neron Misslin, a Democrat from Wilsonville who was recently appointed to the Senate from the House, also voted no.”

#3. There are planned protest this weekend and it includes multiple locations in Oregon — could lead to more rioting.

MSNBC is reporting that anti-Trump protest are scheduled this Saturday across America.  Previously this year such protests have showed up in Portland, Salem, Bend, Eugene, Beaverton and Pendleton.  With the LA riots happening, it may inspire regular protests to become riots.    Already there were arrests made in Portland and Salem this year over the protests.
