Elon Musk issued a public apology to President Donald Trump on Wednesday, backing down from a contentious week-long dispute that saw the two former allies exchange harsh words over government spending legislation.
The Tesla CEO posted his mea culpa on his social media platform X, writing, “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.”
Reports indicate that the markets responded positively to Musk’s conciliatory gesture, with Tesla shares rising 2.44 percent in Frankfurt trading following the announcement.
The public confrontation began last week when Musk, previously serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), criticized Trump’s comprehensive tax and spending legislation as a “disgusting abomination.”
The disagreement quickly escalated into a full-scale public dispute, with Trump declaring that his relationship with the SpaceX founder had ended.
Trump raised the stakes by threatening to withdraw government funding from Musk’s space exploration company, SpaceX, demonstrating the serious consequences the feud could have on Musk’s business empire.
Rather than retreat, Musk initially doubled down on his criticism, posting what sources described as increasingly provocative content targeting the president.
The situation reached its peak when Musk published a now-deleted post alleging Trump’s connection to documents related to deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, crossing a line that appears to have contributed to his subsequent apology.
Trump firmly rejected these allegations and responded by telling ABC News that Musk had “lost his mind,” making clear he had no immediate intentions of reconciling with his former ally.
Musk also deleted another post that had signaled his support for impeaching the president, further evidence of his attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Sources close to Musk indicated that his anger had begun to diminish and that he was interested in repairing his damaged relationship with Trump, the Daily Mail reported.
The timing of Musk’s apology followed Trump’s warning of “serious consequences” if Musk attempted to retaliate against Republicans who supported the controversial spending bill.
Several lawmakers opposed to the legislation had urged Musk to financially support primary challenges against Republicans who voted in favor of the measure.
The relationship between the two men had been financially significant, with Musk providing substantial funding for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump had previously appointed Musk to lead efforts aimed at reducing the federal workforce and cutting government spending, making their falling out particularly noteworthy.
The Daily Mail highlighted that Trump had labeled Musk “disrespectful” and told NBC News on Saturday, “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,” though he declined to elaborate on what those consequences might entail.
Reports emerged suggesting Trump planned to sell Tesla stock he had purchased earlier in the year, though Trump told reporters Monday, “I haven’t heard that, I mean, I may move the Tesla around a little bit.”
Errol Musk, the businessman’s father, weighed in on Monday, attributing the dispute to months of accumulated stress affecting both men.
Speaking at a conference in Moscow organized by conservative Russian business leaders, the elder Musk suggested the conflict needed to end, telling Reuters the situation had become counterproductive.
“They’ve had five months of intense stress,” Errol Musk explained.
“With all the opposition cleared and two people left in the arena, all they have ever done is get rid of everything and now they are trying to get rid of each other – well that has to stop.”
When asked about the resolution, he predicted, “Oh, it will end on a good note – very soon.”
Errol Musk defended his son while acknowledging the challenges of maintaining principles in political situations, stating, “Elon is sticking to his principles but you cannot always stick to your principles in the real world. Sometimes you have to give and take.”
Trump appeared to moderate his criticism of Musk in recent days, publicly expressing goodwill toward his former associate.
On Monday, when questioned about a New York Times report alleging Musk’s drug use during the campaign, Trump responded, “I really don’t know, I don’t think so, I hope not.”
Trump then added, “I wish him well … I just wish him well, very well, actually,” suggesting a potential softening of his position.
