A chaotic night of protests in Los Angeles escalated further when a CNN national correspondent was briefly detained on live television by police attempting to clear out demonstrators near federal buildings.
The Monday night incident unfolded during CNN’s live coverage, drawing immediate attention as anchor Laura Coates reacted in real time.
As law enforcement officers moved to disperse protesters, veteran reporter Jason Carroll was suddenly restrained by police.
Just moments earlier, he had completed a segment from one of the protest zones.
While Coates was mid-conversation with law enforcement analyst John Miller, Carroll’s voice cut through the broadcast.
“I am being detained,” Carroll said clearly, interrupting the studio conversation.
Coates quickly responded, halting the segment.
“Wait one second, John… Jason, what’s going on? I hear you. Am I seeing Jason Carroll being — what happened?”
Footage showed Carroll, dressed in jeans and a black shirt, standing between two officers with his hands behind his back.
The CNN camera crew continued filming as the exchange unfolded.
Seeking clarification, Carroll asked officers, “I’m not being arrested, correct?”
An officer replied, “We’re letting you go, but you can’t come back. Because then if you come back in, then you go. OK, please?”
The situation appeared to de-escalate quickly.
“OK, thank you, officer,” Carroll said before addressing viewers.
“So here’s what happened, Laura. I was called over, and the officer told me to put my hands behind my back,” he explained.
“I said, ‘Am I being arrested?’ He said, ‘You are being detained.’ They took my information and escorted me out of the area.”
Before he could finish, an unidentified man off-camera interrupted.
“I’m Chris with The New York Times. We got video of you guys. If you need it later, call The New York Times,” the man said, according to the New York Post.
Carroll acknowledged the offer, then continued speaking to the studio before his audio feed cut out.
After the feed dropped, analyst John Miller offered context, noting that recent protests have become difficult for officers to manage due to individuals falsely identifying as media while engaging in criminal behavior.
“They’ll say, ‘I have a blog, so I’m press,’ even while throwing bottles or shouting at police,” Miller said.
CNN later released a statement to The Post confirming the temporary detainment.
“A CNN reporting team was briefly detained in Los Angeles while capturing the events that were unfolding as police attempted to clear an area during the ongoing protests and police and military response in the city,” the statement read.
The network stated the issue was resolved after the team presented proper credentials.
Additional incidents have drawn scrutiny.
A photographer for the New York Post, Toby Canham, was struck in the head with a rubber bullet while documenting the protests.
A day earlier, an Australian journalist also reporting live from Los Angeles was hit by similar police-fired rounds.
The protests erupted in response to recent ICE enforcement actions targeting illegal immigration in Los Angeles.
The Trump administration deployed National Guard units to the city as demonstrations intensified near federal properties.
