Mayor Karen Bass (D-CA) defended her city’s handling of violent riots during a Monday CNN interview, insisting the National Guard was unnecessary even as footage of fires and destruction played on screen beside her.
Bass appeared on CNN with hosts Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown to address the ongoing unrest in Los Angeles following a federal immigration enforcement operation.
The mayor argued against President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, claiming the federal response was excessive and unwarranted given current conditions.
Trump issued the National Guard deployment order on Saturday in direct response to violent attacks on federal immigration enforcement personnel, Resist the Mainstream previously reported.
The National Guard deployment came after rioters targeted Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during a scheduled enforcement operation at a Home Depot location.
Bass publicly criticized the president’s decision, arguing that the federal military response would only serve to inflame an already volatile situation.
The Democratic mayor positioned herself in direct opposition to the Trump administration’s law enforcement approach, emphasizing local control over federal intervention.
“I don’t think the National Guard is needed now. Things in L.A. are calm,” Bass stated during the interview.
Her comments came as CNN simultaneously aired video footage showing fires breaking out while police marched through city streets.
Television viewers could observe the disconnect between the mayor’s verbal assertions and the reality unfolding on their screens in real time.
The mayor acknowledged vandalism throughout the downtown area but characterized the destruction as limited in scope.
“I will tell you that I’m saddened by the extent of the vandalism in the form of graffiti all through the downtown area, but it is important for people to know that even in downtown, this is related to a few streets. This is not citywide civil unrest taking place in Los Angeles,” Bass explained.
The unrest originated Saturday following the federal immigration enforcement operation, with demonstrators quickly escalating to violent confrontations with law enforcement.
Rioters specifically targeted federal agents and their vehicles, demonstrating organized resistance to immigration enforcement activities.
Video evidence documented systematic attacks on ICE personnel, including coordinated efforts to damage federal property and intimidate enforcement officers.
The violence represented a direct challenge to federal law enforcement authority within the sanctuary city jurisdiction.
Social media footage captured an individual wearing a motorcycle helmet throwing rocks at windshields of vehicles containing ICE agents.
The FBI announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the rock-throwing suspect.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin documented the attacks on federal agents, posting video showing ICE personnel being pelted with rocks inside their vehicles.
Additional footage and photographs revealed the extent of damage to federal vehicles, including significant windshield damage from projectiles.
One ICE agent sustained injuries during the attacks, according to photographic evidence shared by Melugin.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell addressed the escalating violence during a Sunday press conference, describing dangerous attacks on his officers.
“Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you,” McDonnell stated.
The police chief’s comments highlighted the severity of weapons being used against law enforcement personnel during the riots.
