Left-wing groups are still planning to hold nationwide protests against President Trump this weekend despite the violent riots that caused chaos in Los Angeles.
The protests, which organizers are calling “No Kings” events, are being coordinated by the 50501 Movement, the same group that organized the “Hands Off” demonstrations against President Trump in April.
“They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” the “No Kings” website reads. “The corruption has gone too. far. No thrones. No crowns. No kings.”
The protests are slated to take place on June 14 in defiance of President Trump’s scheduled military parade in Washington, D.C. on the same day. Individual “partner” organizations, such as Michigan Resistance Coalition, Catholics Vote Common Good, and the ACLU, are involved in organizing the protests across the country, according to the No Kings website.
“On June 14—Flag Day—President Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else,” the “No Kings” website adds.
The event is organizing marches and rallies across the country, with the notable exception of Washington D.C..
The protestors aim to “make action everywhere else the story of America that day,” instead of “allowing this birthday parade to be the center of gravity,” according to their website.
The movement is explicitly nonviolent, with a note on its website urging protestors to leave all weapons, including legally permitted ones, at home.
“We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events,” the website says.
The protests come on the heels of rioting and mass unrest in Los Angeles, where protests against ICE activity have resulted in violent confrontations. President Trump deployed the California National Guard to the city in response to the unrest, which escalated on Sunday.
A key difference is their organization; those in LA appear to have been a relatively spontaneous reaction to increased ICE presence, while the upcoming No Kings event is meticulously planned. Down to the specific addresses of local meeting places and coordinated trainings and town halls over Zoom, No Kings aims to be both more peaceful and more optics-minded than the protests in LA.
These efforts put No Kings more in line with previous nationwide peaceful protests against the Trump administration, including “Not My President’s Day” last February, “Hands Off!” protests in April, and “May Day” in May. All of these were also organized by the 50501 Movement.
The 50501 Movement was founded in late 2024, beginning on the social media website Reddit and quickly gaining traction on social media. Its first protests were on February 5, 2025, President’s Day, and soon partnered with existing protest groups. These included the Political Revolution, Women’s March, and Indivisible.
No Kings is explicitly targeting Trump, with the organizer Ezra Levin stating they “want the contrast – this guy’s a big baby, he’s throwing himself a big military parade for his birthday. We, the people, where power actually originates in this country, we’re everywhere else.”
Following the deployment of the National Guard to LA, the coalition organizing No Kings released a statement in support of the protestors, claiming they were peacefully organizing in opposition to ICE, and that the Trump administration is escalating tensions against the recommendations of local leaders. They have restated their commitment to nonviolent protest ahead of Saturday.
