Overnight on Monday, June 9, Russia launched what is being considered the biggest drone assault of the Ukraine war, causing extensive damage across several oblasts in Ukraine.
Knewz.com has learned that the overnight salvo, the latest in the series of recent Russian airstrikes, included nearly 500 kamikaze attack drones targeting central and western Ukraine.

The barrage of projectiles also included 20 missiles of various types, according to reports.
It has been reported that most of the drones fired by Russia were Iranian-made Shahed models launched from Russian-occupied Crimea and the Russian regions of Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kursk.
The Air Force of Ukraine reported that the nation’s air defenses downed 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight on Sunday night, claiming that only 10 drones or missiles hit their targets.
According to officials in Ukraine, one person was injured in the attack.

Russian officials have said that the intensified aerial assaults on Ukraine are part of a series of retaliatory strikes for “Operation Spiderweb“—the most extensive and far-reaching Ukrainian drone attack to date.
On June 1, Ukraine launched “Operation Spiderweb,” destroying billions of dollars worth of Russian aircraft stationed at four airbases across Russia, located thousands of miles from Ukrainian territory.
The meticulously planned drone assault targeted four Russian airbases, namely, Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ukrainka, located deep within Siberia.
According to reports, Ukrainian agents covertly transported 117 drones into Russia, concealing them within containers disguised as wooden sheds mounted on trucks. Once positioned near the targeted airfields, the drones were launched remotely, enabling them to effectively bypass Russian air defenses.

In a recent telephonic conversation with President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly warned of strong retaliation for “Operation Spiderweb.”
Over the next few days, Russia launched multiple airstrikes across Ukraine, the latest being the largest drone assault by the nation since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
On Thursday, June 5, Putin’s forces launched two back-to-back glide bomb strikes on the key city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, causing heavy damage to the Regional Administration building.
According to reports, the attack damaged the regional administration building, destroyed the entrance to a nearby residential building, and shattered hundreds of windows in surrounding structures, including three educational institutions.
Two elderly individuals, aged 74 and 68, were injured in the first glide bomb attack. According to reports, four individuals were rescued from the basement of the damaged administration building.
Yurii Sobolevskyi, first deputy head of the Kherson Regional Council, sustained a concussion and blast trauma during the initial attack and called the strike “pure terrorism.”

The June 5 bombings in Kherson coincided with a series of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine, including a drone attack in Pryluky that killed five people. The casualties include a one-year-old child, his mother, and his grandmother.
The recent escalation of aerial attacks across Ukraine has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push on eastern and northeastern parts of the roughly 620-mile frontline of the Ukraine war, according to reports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement on Sunday that “the situation is very difficult” in some of the war-torn areas, while providing no further details.
“Ukraine is short-handed on the front line against its bigger enemy and needs more military support from its Western partners, especially air defenses. But uncertainty about the U.S. policy on the war has fueled doubts about how much help Kyiv can count on,” reports have mentioned.
On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the nation’s air defenses shot down 49 Ukrainian long-range drones overnight on Monday over seven Russian regions.
