A 25-year-old Indian woman has been arrested after her husband was found murdered during their honeymoon in what police are calling a chilling, premeditated killing arranged by the bride herself.
Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on June 9, nearly a month after her husband, 30-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi, was discovered dead with his throat slit at the bottom of a gorge near the Wei Sawdong waterfalls in Meghalaya. The couple had married on May 11 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in a ceremony reportedly blessed by both families.
Just days after arriving in Meghalaya for their honeymoon, the couple went missing. A week later, Raja’s decomposing body was found, stripped of his wallet, gold ring, and chain. What started as a baffling disappearance quickly turned into a murder investigation that has now led to multiple arrests—and raised serious questions about motive, betrayal, and the possible involvement of more people.
Police say Sonam hired hitmen from her home state of Madhya Pradesh to kill her husband during the honeymoon. Three suspects—Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (21)—were arrested in overnight raids following Sonam’s surrender. One of them, according to Raja’s brother Vipin, worked in Sonam’s office. Police are still searching for a fourth suspect.
Business owner Sahil Yadav told Times of India that Sonam appeared alone at his roadside restaurant in the early morning hours, asking to borrow a phone to call her brother before breaking down in tears. Police arrived shortly after and took her into custody.
Meghalaya police believe her sudden appearance wasn’t a coincidence. “All these days she hadn’t come out, but the night we caught the others, she suddenly surfaced. That speaks for itself,” said Vivek Syiem, superintendent of police. Authorities have also suggested Sonam may have been involved in an extramarital affair, though details remain unconfirmed.
Raja’s murder has drawn national attention, and the case has sparked outrage over how it’s being handled. Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, is publicly accusing the Meghalaya police of framing his daughter. “My daughter is innocent. She somehow managed to escape her captors,” he told the BBC, insisting the police fabricated the story. He is demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter, claiming that officials from the Meghalaya police should themselves be investigated.
Despite being arrested, Sonam has yet to speak directly to her family. Her father claims the marriage was arranged, and the couple barely knew each other before their wedding day. He alleges that Raja’s family and the police are trying to scapegoat Sonam in a plot far more complex than is being reported.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma praised police efforts, calling the arrests a “major breakthrough” on social media platform X. “Three assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, female has surrendered, and operation still on to catch one more assailant.”
