HOUSTON, TX – A devastating incident unfolded in Southwest Houston early this morning, leaving a woman dead and a man, believed to be her grandson, in police custody following a violent altercation. The events transpired at an apartment complex located on West Belfort.
Authorities were alerted to the scene at Belfort Plaza Apartments shortly after 2 a.m. Responding to reports of a fatal stabbing, police discovered the tragic scene inside one of the apartment units. Although the area has since been cleared, the investigation remains active.
Initial reports from the Houston Police Department indicate that the victim, believed to be a grandmother, made a distress call to 911, claiming her grandson was attacking her. By the time officers arrived, the situation had escalated dramatically. The suspect, a 25-year-old male possibly experiencing a lapse in his schizophrenia medication, engaged in a confrontation with the officers.
Upon entering the apartment, police found the woman, tragically, had been fatally stabbed. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives have confirmed that the woman lived alone in the apartment, and there were no signs of forced entry, suggesting the suspect may have had access to the residence.
Family members at the scene confirmed to reporters that the victim, Lydia, was indeed the suspect’s grandmother. They described a close bond between the two, adding to the confusion and distress surrounding the incident.
Lydia, who was just days shy of her 66th birthday, was known to her family as a devoted grandmother to six grandchildren. Her sudden and violent death has left her family in shock and mourning.
As the investigation continues, detectives are exploring the possibility that mental illness may have been a contributing factor in the tragedy.
