A U.S. Army soldier accused of murdering his pregnant wife has agreed to a plea deal, nearly a year after she vanished from their Hawaii home.
Private First Class Dewayne Arthur Johnson II will plead guilty next week in connection to the disappearance and presumed death of his 19-year-old wife, Mischa Mabeline Kaalohilani Johnson. Mischa was six months pregnant at the time she was reported missing from their residence at Schofield Barracks on July 31.
Army officials confirmed that Dewayne, 29, faces five major charges with 19 specifications. These include the murder of Mischa, the intentional killing of her unborn baby girl, obstruction of justice, and several counts related to child pornography.
“The guilty plea is subject to acceptance by the military judge,” said Michelle McCaskill, spokesperson for the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel. “If accepted, sentencing will follow during the hearing.”
Authorities launched an intensive search after Dewayne reported Mischa missing on August 1. He allegedly told investigators that she was “emotionally distraught,” prompting a sweep of the base and surrounding areas. The Army even offered a $10,000 reward for information.
Despite the search efforts, Mischa’s remains have never been found. In February, the Army officially declared her “presumed deceased.”
Dewayne was taken into custody and has remained in military pretrial confinement. He waived his right to an Article 32 preliminary hearing—a step that often precedes a court-martial.
The charges against him stunned even seasoned investigators. Alongside the murder charges, Dewayne is also accused of producing and distributing child pornography.
“If we can’t have Mischa, the least we can do is make sure that man stays in jail,” her sister, Marianna Tapiz, told local reporters. “He needs to stay in jail for the rest of his life.”
The courtroom hearing is scheduled to take place at Wheeler Army Airfield. Further details surrounding the plea deal and possible sentencing have not been released.
