North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik appears to be edging closer to running for governor of New York next year.
In an interview with conservative talk radio host Sid Rosenberg Tuesday, the six-term Republican said she’s been criss-crossing the state testing her support. “I’m always up for a fight,” she said. “We need to save New York and I’m taking a very strong look, and I’m going to make a decision in the coming months.”
Stefanik could face a primary challenge from Hudson Valley Congressman Mike Lawler, although President Donald Trump has suggested that Lawler should focus on retaining his seat in Congress in 2026.
Stefanik announced Wednesday she’s formed a “Save New York” PAC to raise campaign money for local Republican candidates across the state. Democrats have been in control of both houses of the state legislature for several years. “And then we will make history and fire Kathy Hochul,” she wrote on social media.
