A horrifying acid attack in the middle of the night has left a British father dead and triggered a sweeping murder investigation involving his ex-girlfriend and several others accused of being part of an organized crime group.
Danny Cahalane, 38, was at his home in Plymouth, England, when he answered the door around 3:55 a.m. on Friday, February 21. What followed was a brutal ambush: a group of people threw sulfuric acid directly into his face, according to Devon & Cornwall Police.
At the time of the attack, Cahalane’s young daughter was asleep inside the house.
Authorities believe the assault was orchestrated by Cahalane’s ex-girlfriend, 34-year-old Paris Wilson, a mother of two who once worked as a probation officer and volunteered at a local prison. She now works in marketing, The Times reports.
Despite weeks of intensive medical care, Cahalane died on May 3 from his injuries. Police said he passed away “despite the best efforts of medical professionals.”
In April, Wilson and eight others were hit with serious charges, including conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to kidnap. The group includes six men from London: Abdulrasheed Adedoja, 22, Jean Mukuna, 23, Isanah Sungum, 21, Ramarnee Bakas, 22, Arrone Mukuna, 24, and Brian Kalemba, 22 — along with Jenna Said, 39, of Plymouth.
Several of the suspects are also facing charges related to criminal property and drug offenses. One of them, Israel Augustus, 25, is accused of physically carrying out the acid attack. He faces multiple charges including applying a corrosive substance with intent to cause grievous harm, aggravated burglary, and possession of an offensive weapon.
On June 2, murder charges were officially filed against Augustus, Wilson, Adedoja, Sungum, Bakas-Sithole, and Kalemba, according to the BBC.
The following day, Wilson and four others pleaded not guilty to all charges in a hearing at Plymouth Crown Court. Three defendants have yet to enter pleas, and one — Jean Mukuna — declined to enter a plea for an additional charge related to drug trafficking.
While the legal proceedings continue, Cahalane’s family is left devastated by his loss.
“Danny was an outstanding father and son,” his family said in a statement released through police. “He is well loved by his family and friends, and as a family we cherish his love and memories. We are struggling to come to terms with Danny’s passing.”
The murder investigation remains ongoing.
