CHULA VISTA, CA – A former student aide at Mar Vista High School appeared in court on Monday, facing accusations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a student. The defendant, 31-year-old Lizette Ortega Velez, was arrested earlier this month after an investigation was launched by school authorities.
During a brief court session, Ortega Velez, dressed in a gray jail jumpsuit with her hands cuffed, was accompanied by her newly appointed private attorney. The court proceedings focused on transitioning her legal representation from a public defender and scheduling future court dates.
Ortega Velez is facing charges stemming from allegations that she engaged in oral sex and intercourse with a 17-year-old student off school grounds. The incidents reportedly occurred during the academic year, with the defendant allegedly attempting to dissuade the student from disclosing the relationship.
Employed by Rho Health, a San Diego-based company contracted by Mar Vista High School, Ortega Velez has pleaded not guilty. Rho Health, in a previous statement, emphasized their commitment to student safety, highlighting their rigorous background checks, which include Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearances.
Despite inquiries, the school district has not disclosed the duration of Ortega Velez’s employment or whether they will continue their partnership with Rho Health. In a statement, the district acknowledged the ongoing investigation and reassured their dedication to community support.
Ortega Velez is scheduled to return to court later this week for a bail review hearing, with a preliminary hearing set for July 24. The case continues to unfold as the community grapples with the implications of the allegations.
