One post she endorsed on LinkedIn came from Zakiya Carr, Biden’s DEI officer, gushing about “building bridges” through woke policies. Showell’s disdain for Trump’s agenda is clear, and her leadership role in the Summit raises red flags about its true purpose.

Thomas Hastings, the Chargé d’Affaires to the Organization of American States (OAS), is no better. Appointed to his role by Joe Biden just days before Trump’s second term began, Hastings climbed the ranks under Hillary Clinton’s State Department, serving in key posts like Political-Economic Chief in Angola (2010-2013) and Senior Economic Officer on the Mexico Desk (2013-2015). His timing and background suggest he’s another Biden holdover positioned to steer the Summit away from Trump’s priorities. Together, Showell and Hastings are crafting an event that reeks of the Obama-Biden playbook—globalist, woke, pro-China, and soft on America’s adversaries.

The Summit’s agenda, as outlined on its official website, is a DEI fever dream. It prioritizes “diverse groups” like Afro-Descendants, Indigenous Peoples, Women’s Organizations, Labor Unions, and LGBTQ activists, aligning perfectly with the radical policies Biden championed. This focus is a direct affront to President Trump’s commitment to meritocracy and traditional American values. Instead of addressing critical issues like trade, security, or border integrity, the Summit is poised to waste time on identity politics, alienating conservative allies across the Americas who share Trump’s vision.

Worse still, the Dominican Republic’s hosting of the Summit is a geopolitical disaster in the making. Under Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader, the country has rolled out the red carpet for China, undermining U.S. interests and cozying up to a communist regime. Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, who secured the Summit for the Dominican Republic, has been a key player in strengthening ties with Beijing. A Chinese Communist Party press release from April 2025 detailed Álvarez’s meeting with China’s Special Representative Qiu Xiaoqi, where they discussed deepening “bilateral relations.”

China’s influence is undeniable—bilateral trade hit $4 billion in 2024, making the Dominican Republic China’s top Caribbean trading partner. Chinese Communist firms like Huawei dominate the Dominican telecom market, and investments in strategic ports like Manzanillo and Santo Domingo have flourished, despite Abinader’s earlier promises to President Trump to limit such deals.

China’s fingerprints are all over the Summit itself. A February 2025 report from the Summit’s website revealed that Beijing joined traditional U.S. allies in a briefing with OAS Permanent Observers, signaling its growing role in a conference meant to bolster American influence.

This is a slap in the face to President Trump, who has consistently called out China’s predatory trade practices and expansionist ambitions. The Dominican Republic’s alignment with China, coupled with its hosting of a Summit run by anti-Trump bureaucrats, risks turning the event into a propaganda win for Beijing.

The Dominican Republic’s broader failures only compound the problem. The country is plagued by drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and human rights issues, yet the Biden administration turned a blind eye, coddling Abinader’s government. Border Czar Tom Homan has slammed this leniency, stating, “The Biden Administration’s coddling of the Dominican government has gotten us nothing, aside from more cocaine, fentanyl, gangs, and illegal immigrants on American streets.”

Upon taking office, President Abinader created an “independent” Public Prosecutor’s Office, which subsequently launched five “anti-corruption investigations.”

All five investigations have targeted Abinader’s opposition party, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Abinader embraced “coercive measures” like preventive detention, which forced his political opponents into jail for years without charges or evidence Abinader’s so-called “anti-corruption” crackdowns, praised by Biden ally Samantha Power, mirror the lawfare tactics used against Trump by rogue prosecutors like Fani Willis and Alvin Bragg. This is not a reliable partner for the United States—it’s a liability.

The Summit of the Americas is shaping up to be a disaster for President Trump’s administration unless immediate action is taken. Showell and Hastings, with their Clinton-era roots and Democrat loyalties to Obama and Biden, are steering the event toward a woke, China-friendly debacle that could embarrass the United States on the world stage.
