A new report alleges that Democratic donors and insiders are becoming increasingly upset with First Lady Jill Biden, as she refuses to suggest that her husband drop out of the race.
The Daily Mail reported that the first lady has refused to suggest to her husband that he should consider dropping out, as multiple reports have suggested that she is the biggest advocate for him to continue running.
Democrats across the nation have begun turning on the president, following his disastrous performance against former President Donald Trump at Thursday night’s debate, after he stumbled, stuttered, and seemingly slept his way through the painful 90 minutes.
However, hedge fund manager and market expert Dougie Kass told the Mail that Jill is insistent that the 81-year-old Joe continue running for reelection, as he is set to discuss the future of his reelection campaign on Sunday with his family at Camp David. In the week leading up to the debate, Biden had been at Camp David working with advisers on debate prep.
One source told the Mail that just about the only person Biden still listens to is his wife of nearly 50 years, saying, “The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady…If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.”
The First Lady has already faced significant pushback and ridicule for her childish message to her husband in the minutes following the debate, in which she told him he “knew all the facts” during the event.
“Joe, you did such a great job! You answered every question, you knew all the facts!” she said to Biden, in a tone that would have been more properly used toward a 6-year-old.
Donors’ frustration with Jill doesn’t just begin here, however, as in the minutes before the debate she had told a group of some of the party’s biggest spenders that Joe was “ready to go,” a claim that was very quickly proven false.
“As President Joe Biden was going over his final notes with his inner circle and getting ready to debate Donald Trump on June 27 in Atlanta, his wife slipped into a nearby meeting of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors,” Time Magazine reported. “The Biden Victory Fund and the Democratic National Committee’s financial bigwigs had all assembled in the Ritz Carlton as part of a two-day political briefing that featured emotional pep talks and face-time with VIPs. ‘Joe’s ready to go,’ Dr. Biden told the group. ‘He’s prepared.’”
Some believe that the First Lady and Biden Administration staff will continue to protect the president, with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd predicting that they “will build their protective wall ever higher and shoo away reporters.”
Indeed, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty has already dismissed the idea of Biden’s withdrawal, saying in an email to the Daily Mail that doing so at this time “is the best possible way for Donald Trump to win and us to lose.”
“First of all: Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee, period. End of story. Voters voted. He won overwhelmingly,” Flaherty said. “And if he were to drop out, it would lead to weeks of chaos, internal foodfighting, and a bunch of candidates who limp into a brutal floor fight at the convention, all while Donald Trump has time to speak to American voters uncontested.”
While reports from behind the scenes tell a different story, the Democratic party is still working to appear unified behind Biden, with former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi offering public support for him.
“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself,” Obama said in a post on X. “Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”
