On Sunday, former Covid Czar Anthony Fauci spoke out on President Biden’s bid for reelection, following his disastrous performance at Thursday’s debate against former President Donald Trump.
Fox News reported that Fauci, once the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), was asked during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” about whether or not the 81-year-old Biden should be running for reelection.
Fauci was unwilling to give a direct answer to the question, however, simply responding, “You know, I think it’s just an individual choice, and you really can’t generalize.”
He added that every voter must look at the various candidates as individuals, and decide for themselves “how they feel, and what they feel they can do.”
“You know, what their passion is, what their energy is,” Fauci added. “Those are the kind of things.”
Fauci was then pressed about Thursday’s debate, and asked if there was anything during the event that surprised him. He declined to answer, saying he did not want to comment on anything that “would have political implications.”
Instead, he pivoted to talk about his “very positive” interactions with Biden while he served in government with Biden. Fauci was Biden’s Chief Medical Adviser on COVID-19 before he retired in late 2022.
“He asks probing questions. He’s right on point on things,” Fauci said of Biden, neglecting to specify any examples. “So my personal experience has been quite positive with him.”
Biden’s performance against Trump has been widely panned as damning proof that he is unfit for office. Many former Biden allies, as well as other major media outlets who have long defended Biden as mentally competent, are now changing their tunes, calling on him to step away from his reelection bid.
“There is no reason for the party to risk the stability and security of the country by forcing voters to choose between Mr. Trump’s deficiencies and those of Mr. Biden,” the New York Times’ editorial board said in a statement.
“It’s with a very heavy heart and deep sadness that I’ve come to the conclusion that the best step for the Democratic Party and for the country is for President Biden to announce that he will not seek the Democratic Party’s nomination to be the presidential candidate,” said former Biden staffer Jamie Metzl.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution argued that Biden had failed to convey a “competent and coherent vision for the future of America”
“He failed to outline the most fundamental aspects of his platform,” they wrote. “He failed to take credit for the significant accomplishments of his 3½ years in office. And he failed to counter the prevarications of an opponent, who, according to CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, lied 30 times during the course of the debate, approximately once every 90 seconds of his allotted time.”
There have been conflicting reports from Biden’s own camp. A report from Saturday indicated that Biden planned to remain in the race, and participate in the second debate against former President Donald Trump.
“NEW, as just reported on @CNN: Not only does @POTUS not plan to drop out, Biden remains committed to a second debate in September, an adviser tells me,” wrote CNN White House Correspondent Kayla Tausche on X.
However, on Sunday, another report surfaced that Biden would be talking with his family about his political future in the coming days. “The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady,” one source told Breitbart. “If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.”
