CV NEWS FEED// The last of the three female Republican state senators who broke ranks with their party to oppose pro-life legislation, was ousted in a primary held on Tuesday, June 25.
Katrina Shealey, South Carolina’s longest-serving female senator, was soundly defeated by her primary rival, Carlisle Kennedy, according to results reported by the Daily Gazette.
South Carolina had two other female Republican senators, Freshman Sen. Penry Gustafson, R-Camden, and Sen. Sandy Senn, R-Charleston, who both lost the primaries on June 11.
Despite being a Republican and a “lifelong conservative leader,” with a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable, “from our unborn children to our senior citizens,” Sen. Katrina Shealy and the two Republican “sister senators” all opposed pro-life legislation, blocking an almost complete ban on abortion, later also opposing a six-week ban, the Heartbeat bill, which passed last year without their vote.
On Sen. Shealy’s website, she includes a section of all the legislation she voted to pass that protects life. None of the legislation has to do with abortion.
Carlisle Kennedy describes himself as “proudly pro-life” and in favor of the Heartbeat bill. Like Sen. Shealy, Kennedy supports lowering taxes, defending second amendment rights and school choice, but he turned the female senator’s vote against two consecutive pro-life bills as the centerpiece of his campaign.
