A Utah man left behind a disturbing message on his social media account just days before murdering his wife and then turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide on Thursday.
According to KUTV, police found 57-year-old Olin Johnson and his 52-year-old wife, Kerilyn Johnson, deceased inside their $1.34 million home in American Fork, Utah on June 20.
“We’re not real sure what led up to it, but he shot her twice and then shot himself, ending his life,” American Fork Police Lt. Stuart Fore said in a statement released on Friday. Fore also stated that there were no signs of a struggle or argument taking place before the killings.
While police still have not determined a motive, Olin’s Facebook account might fill in a piece of the puzzle. On June 18, Olin made an unsettling Facebook post regarding his feelings and his love for motorcycles and skiing, as reported by the New York Post.
“No matter how crappy a person I am, motorcycles always love me back. Oh and skiing. Skiing loves me too,” Johnson posted on his Facebook account. The post also had pictures of him on his motorcycle and skiing.
The outlet also reported that his profile bio stated that he was a “father to 6 great kids and one Beautiful wife.” He also posted pictures of him and Kerilyn celebrating her birthday in Australia. In another recent post, Olin bragged about his wife’s breadmaking ability. His Facebook account is no longer available.
The deaths came as a shock to neighbors, who described the neighborhood as being “tight-knit.” Neighbors reported having played softball with the couple the night before and stated that they were unaware of any problems they might have had.
Olin was the owner of Simtek Modular, a “service company that makes modular panels for force-on-force training,” according to his LinkedIn account. Kerilyn was employed at the BYU School of Music as an adjunct faculty member for the past two years.
The couple was married for 32 years, just celebrating their anniversary in April, the New York Post reported.
The couple left behind six children, one of which was reported to have been the one to discover the crime scene.
“The family is requesting privacy as they grieve their loss,” the American Fork Police said. “We express our most profound and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Olin and Kerilyn.”
A candlelight vigil was scheduled for the family Sunday evening. A GoFundMe account was also created by Rebecca Oden, a family friend, to assist the couple’s children in paying for and making funeral arrangements.
“With the sudden passing of Olin and Kerilyn Lowe Johnson many are devastated and desire to show love and support to their six children as they navigate this tragedy,” Oden wrote. “It is hoped that they would not need to shoulder the financial burden of paying for funeral expenses and other unexpected costs over the coming weeks and months.”
Over $65,000 has been reached out of the $100,000 goal as of Sunday.
