One reason you’d know that Donald Trump’s election has been a historic breakthrough for the GOP is that even his vice presidential pick is much-awaited. The former president managed to keep his choice under wraps as we held onto our seats while we waited for the perfect time.
On a campaign trip in Philadelphia on Saturday, the Republican presumptive nominee for president remarked that he had finally picked his VP nominee, only one week before the first presidential debate.
Trump remarked that he has finally picked his running mate for the November election but has not informed the candidate yet. He also hinted that the VP pick would attend the debate.
Trump and Biden’s first debate will be broadcast live on CNN for 90 minutes.
Trump’s campaign doubled down on the selection process for Trump’s running mate, with several candidates receiving vetting materials from Team Trump.
During a media interview, the MAGA leader also expressed that he may introduce his VP choice at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin next month.
Sources reveal that among the shortlist were North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R), Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida).
The former president also considers Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida), and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson.
Republican strategists and political scientists commented on the manner of Trump’s vice presidential selection process this time.
Florida political scientist Susan MacManus quipped, “It’ll be the most important VP selection we’ve had in recent history.”
She noted that usually, VP picks have little effect on voter preference; however, given the ongoing witch hunt against Trump, it has created concerns for the former president, his possible running mate, and voters.
MacManus also mentioned that the possibility of imprisonment before the Republican National Convention could push him to announce his VP choice sooner.
Political insiders also mentioned that Trump’s public declarations of his possible pick are intentional and are probably “trial balloons” to test the feedback and reportage of legacy media.
Another insider added that Trump may pick “someone no one’s ever thought of.”
“That would be so, Trump.”
His campaign earlier remarked that he has sole discretion on who he wants to be his running mate.
Even the senior adviser for the Trump campaign, Brian Hughes, commented: “Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless the person is named Donald J. Trump.”
