Taiwan “will not surrender”, will not yield to China’s pressures and will “defend national sovereignty, safeguarding the democratic and constitutional way of life”. This was stated by the president of the island, de facto independent, but considered by Beijing as a “rebellious province” to be “reunified”. Lai Ching-te (William Lai), seen by Beijing as a “dangerous separatist”, spoke a month after taking office on May 20, coinciding with massive Chinese military maneuvers.
“The annexation of Taiwan is a national policy” of the People’s Republic of China, Lai said during a press conference as reported by Cna. And he accused the Dragon for resorting, in recent years, to “non-traditional coercive methods to try to force Taiwan to submit”, but – he repeated – “Taiwan will not yield”.
