It’s less than a week away from the big debate between President Joe Biden and presumptive GOP nominee Donald J. Trump and the incumbent could greatly benefit from low expectations.
Fox News host Trey Gowdy warned that Republicans have so downplayed Biden’s abilities that Trump could be walking into a trap in Atlanta, a debate where the deck has already been stacked against him with restrictive rules and two CNN moderators with a track record of hostility for the former president.
During Friday’s edition of “Special Report” on Fox News, the former Republican congressman discussed the debate with guest host Shannon Bream.

“Let’s start with the debate expectations,” Bream said. “I mean is the right, are Republicans in trouble because they’ve you know spent a lot of time in recent weeks talking about how President Biden can’t find his way off the stage, and we saw what happened in the State of the Union when he came in stronger than expected, and there was a ton of praise for him.”
She was referring to Biden’s performance at the annual SOTU speech where he showed up like he was shot out of a canyon, an angry rant that some have suggested was given while under the influence of drugs.
“Yeah, they’ve got to be very careful. I don’t know why Republicans fall into this trap of setting high exceptions,” Gowdy responded, likely meaning low expectations for Biden. “I mean, they — this is — this debate, Shannon, to me is fascinating because it’s a combination of agenda and acuity. It’s content and cognition, so, the viewers will be watching both.”
“Not only what you say but are you fit to office,” he said. “So, I don’t recall a debate in my lifetime where both of those issues were front and center for both of the candidates. Not just what you say but I mean, can you remember which day of the week it is? That’s gonna be an issue.”
Following a week of controversy over videos highlighting his recent senior moments – or “cheap fakes” as they have been called by propagandists – the octogenarian Democrat is hunkered down at Camp David for a full week to prep for the high-stakes event, one where the rules are extremely favorable to him.
There will be no live audience, Trump’s mic can get cut, and two of the cable network’s most brazenly biased Trump haters, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, will be moderating – all favorable for Biden.
Another advantage for Biden is the gag order in the Stormy Daniels “hush money” trial where Trump was unjustly convicted in a New York City kangaroo court, for now bearing the stigma of “convicted felon,” one that the geriatric Democrat will likely invoke often next week.
There’s also the matter of Biden being “jacked up” for the 90-minute debate and Trump has suggested that the 81-year-old should be subjected to a drug test.
“I’m gonna demand a drug test too, by the way,” Trump told Minnesota Republicans last month. “I am, no I really am. I don’t want him coming in like the State of the Union, he was high as a kite.”
With the debate coming up fast, Trump isn’t buying the low expectations for Biden, crediting him with being a “worthy debater” on a recent edition of the “All In” podcast.
“I assume he’s gonna be somebody that will be a worthy debater. … I don’t want to underestimate him,” the former president said.
“All I can say is this, I watched him with Paul Ryan, and he destroyed Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan with the water, he was chugging water left and right … and he beat Paul Ryan. So, I’m not underestimating him. I’m not underestimating him. It is what it is,” Trump added, referring to a younger Biden’s destruction of Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012.
