On Friday night, Justin Timberlake broke his silence on his drunk driving arrest earlier this week, which led to him spending a night in jail and his mugshot going viral.
“It’s been a tough week,” Timberlake told the crowd at his concert on Friday night, at Chicago’s United Center, continuing his “Forget Tomorrow” world tour after it was disrupted by the arrest. He had reportedly already apologized to his backstage crew but had not publicly acknowledged the incident until this evening, per the New York Post.
The 43-year-old Grammy winner had been “having dinner with a bunch of friends,” on Monday night at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, NY. The Post reported that, shortly after midnight, he left the party, got in his car, and almost immediately blew past a stop sign, which led local officers to pull him over.
RTM previously reported that eyewitnesses alleged Timberlake was swerving across the road, which was a contributing factor in officers’ decision to pull him over.
Sources told the Post that the officer who pulled Timberlake over was “so young that he didn’t even know” who he was, and reportedly didn’t recognize his name.
Bodycam footage reportedly showed Timberlake tell the officer that the incident was “going to ruin the tour,” which prompted the cop to ask “what tour?”
“I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” Timberlake allegedly told officers, according to sources citing court docs. He refused to take a breathalyzer test three separate times and failed a field sobriety test, prompting officers to arrest him.
The Post cited another witness who alleged that Timberlake was “wasted” and had grabbed someone else’s drink from the table and drinking it while they were in the bathroom.
In the morning, after spending the night in jail, Timberlake appeared in court briefly before being released without bail. However, due to his refusal to take a breathalyzer, his driving privileges in the state of New York have been suspended, just days before he is set to perform at Madison Square Garden. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 26.
He has two children with actress Jessica Biel, whom he married in 2012. His wife, who was in Manhattan at the time of the arrest for a film, said she was “shocked” and “extremely upset” by news of her husband’s arrest, per US Weekly.
“Jessica is extremely upset. She was shocked to hear the news and had no idea as she was working,” the outlet reported, citing an insider. “She was really worried about him.”
Timberlake could face up to a year in Suffolk County Jail, but it is expected that he will receive a slap on the wrist due to his otherwise clean criminal record, most likely to be fined $500 and have his license suspended in New York for 90 days.
“I don’t think [the DA’s Office] will make an example of him nor will they be more lenient. I think the case will rise and fall on the merits of the case,” Suffolk County criminal defense lawyer Michael Brown told the Post, noting that the office is known for being “fairly tough” in cases where people refuse to take a Breathalyzer test.
