Two Venezuelan illegal immigrants stand accused of killing a 12-year-old Houston girl found strangled in a creek earlier this week.
Fox News reported that the Houston Police Department linked Johan Jose Rangel Martinez, 21, and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26, to the death of Jocelyn Nungaray.
A firestorm has erupted online over this story because Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos were never supposed to be in the US. In fact, they were recently caught by Border Patrol.
Both illegal immigrants have been charged with capital murder.
The Harris County medical examiner reported that Jocelyn died from strangulation, with no confirmation if she was sexually assaulted.
Sources with the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Fox that Pena Ramos crossed illegally into El Paso, Texas, back in May.
Border Patrol agents apprehended him, however, he was released into the US with a Notice to Appear in court.
Rangel Martinez also crossed illegally into El Paso in March. He too was caught by Border Patrol, but eventually released under undisclosed circumstances.
Fox reached out to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement for more information about the suspects’ statuses but has not yet received a response.
“It’s just an overwhelming sense of relief to know they’re just not out there,” Nungaray’s mother told Fox Houston.
Authorities released surveillance video images from the 7-Eleven where the 12-year-old girl was last seen.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire revealed earlier this week that Nungaray was there speaking with her 13-year-old boyfriend after sneaking out of her family’s apartment.
The boyfriend told investigators he could hear Nungaray talking with two people, per Fox.
Police reported that Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos started their evening at a restaurant on Sunday night.
They left and walked southbound, captured on camera, before meeting with Nungaray and talking to her for a few minutes.
The trio then walked to the 7-Eleven.
Nungaray, Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos were later depicted walking to the bridge where investigators believe the pre-teen was murdered, images show.
Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos then returned to their shared apartment, leaving the girl’s body behind.
Police suspect the pair lived in the same apartment complex as Nungaray.
“Maybe they were seen in the complex, but she normally wouldn’t walk around,” Nungaray’s mother told Fox, adding that it was not typical for her daughter to talk to strangers.
Mayor Whitmire stressed the importance of a swift trial following the arrest of the two alleged killers. “We’re going to be watching you; the arrests have taken place, and the charges have been filed,” he said.
“Now, we want the justice system to do its job. If there was ever a circumstance where you do not give someone bail, this is it.”
X users swiftly blamed Biden and Democrats for Nungaray’s tragic death. “Thanks, Democrats,” Collin Rugg posted.
Paul A. Szypula said, “Take a moment to listen to Jocelyn’s mom as she expresses grief at losing her daughter. Feel her pain, sadness and powerlessness.”
“This could be any of us,” he added. “Joe Biden did this.”
