The mother of trans-identifying Minneapolis mass shooter Robin Westman has not cooperated with police in the aftermath of a deadly school shooting that killed two children and injured 18 others.
Authorities revealed Thursday that she has retained a criminal defense attorney and has declined communication with investigators.
Mary Grace Westman, who previously worked at Annunciation Catholic School, the site of the attack, has not returned police calls or responded to outreach attempts, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed at a press conference.
“We have not been successful in talking to the shooter’s mother,” O’Hara said.
He did not provide further details about the communication efforts but confirmed investigators have executed four search warrants since the incident.
Those searches yielded hundreds of pieces of evidence, including electronic devices.
Fox News reported Thursday that Mary Grace Westman later retained attorney Ryan Garry, a Minnesota-based criminal defense lawyer.
Garry told the outlet that his client was deeply distressed by the shooting but had no involvement.
“She is completely distraught about the situation and has no culpability but is seeking an attorney to deal with calls like this,” Garry said.
Mary Grace Westman has a long connection to Annunciation Catholic School.
She served as a secretary at the school for five years before retiring in 2021, according to the church’s website.
Her son Robin was also a graduate of the school, which sits less than a mile from the family’s Tudor-style home.
On Wednesday morning, 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire through the stained-glass windows of Annunciation Catholic Church during a back-to-school Mass.
Children were gathered inside when the shooting began.
Two young children were killed, and 18 others were injured, including 15 students.
Several remain in critical condition.
The school confirmed that the victims included elementary-aged children who had been attending the morning Mass with classmates and teachers.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene as parishioners and staff tried to evacuate students to safety.
Authorities reported that the shooter had planned the attack and left behind a manifesto.
A recording of the document was posted to YouTube before being taken down.
In the writings, Robin expressed regret over being transgender and discussed feelings of frustration and disillusionment with gender identity.
“I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I’m tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself,” Westman wrote, according to a translation of the manifesto reviewed by The Post.
In another passage, Westman wrote: “I can’t cut my hair now as it would be an embarrassing defeat, and it might be a concerning change of character that could get me reported. It just always gets in my way. I will probably chop it on the day of the attack.”
The writings also expressed regret over transitioning.
“I regret being trans. I wish I was a girl, I just know I cannot achieve that body with the technology we have today. I also can’t afford that,” Westman said.
The New York Post reported that court records show that in 2020, Mary Grace Westman signed documents supporting Robin’s legal name change from Robert to Robin.
The outlet further highlighted that the attorney representing Mary Grace Westman, Ryan Garry, has handled several high-profile cases.
He previously represented protesters during the George Floyd demonstrations in a lawsuit alongside former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, according to his professional profile.
He also defended rapper Desiigner in 2023 when the performer was charged with indecent exposure on an airplane, per the Post.
Garry later secured a not guilty verdict for a state trooper accused of a sex crime.
Police Chief O’Hara confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
He stated that hundreds of pieces of evidence, including electronics seized from the shooter’s residence, will be reviewed to determine motive and planning details.
