Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan issued the standard statement of sympathy after the bloodshed at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis — but the internet didn’t forget. Almost instantly, critics resurfaced photos of Flanagan proudly wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “Protect Trans Kids” alongside a dagger graphic. Coming just hours after a 23-year-old transgender-identifying male gunned down children during Mass, the contrast was too much for many to stomach.
Her carefully sanitized post read:
My heart goes out to all those affected by the terrifying act of violence at Annunciation Catholic school this morning. I’m grateful to the law enforcement who responded.
Please join me in praying for the victims and the families of the Annunciation community.

But critics were merciless. Replies poured in, blasting her past rhetoric and policies as part of the very climate that enabled this latest act of carnage.

“Their blood is on your hands. You gave this death cult sanctuary.”
“Culpable. It’s on your watch with your encouragement.”
“You cannot escape responsibility for this no matter what platitudes you post. You own this.”
One viral response called out her use of the vague phrase “terrifying act of violence”: “So carefully sterilized, as if it were just some random person attacking other random people. No mention of hate — one of your favorite words — even though this was entirely about hate. Hate that people such as yourself in leadership have encouraged.”
The backlash is compounded by Flanagan’s history of championing Minnesota’s far-left social agenda. In April 2023, she celebrated with Gov. Tim Walz as the state passed the Trans Refuge Bill, boasting: “We just signed the Conversion Therapy Ban, Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, and Trans Refuge Bill into law. In Minnesota, we’re building a state where everyone is safe to be who they are, love who they love, and live without fear of violence and discrimination.”
Minnesota Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan: “When our children tell us who they are, it is our job as grown-ups to listen and to believe them.”

But while the administration was busy carving out protections for gender ideology, Minnesota’s Catholic and independent schools were begging for help. Leaders of nonpublic schools — serving 72,000 children across Catholic, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities — pleaded with Walz for funding to secure their campuses. Their April 14, 2023 letter, obtained by The Daily Wire, warned of an “urgent and critical need” for school security following the Nashville Christian school shooting, also committed by a transgender-identifying individual.
Their appeals went unanswered. Despite a $17.6 billion budget surplus, Walz and Flanagan never authorized the funding. Instead, the governor made national headlines for signing Minnesota into law as a “trans refuge state” that very same month.

Now, as Catholic families mourn two dead children and 17 wounded parishioners, the juxtaposition is impossible to ignore. Leaders like Flanagan and Walz chose to prioritize ideological activism while brushing off repeated, explicit warnings about school safety.
