A Washington D.C.-based Jewish policy group is facing backlash after posting a message on X that critics say justifies the killing of Christians who have refused to leave churches in Gaza City. The organization deleted the controversial statement hours after posting it.
As CatholicVote reported Aug. 26, Christian clergy and nuns said earlier this week they would remain inside church compounds in Gaza City despite an Israeli military offensive moving deeper into the area, citing their responsibility to care for the elderly, disabled, women, and children who are unable to move.
The Times of Israel quoted leaders of the Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchates, who said priests, nuns, and families have taken shelter in the Saint Porphyrius Orthodox Church and Holy Family Catholic Church.
In an Aug. 27 post, the Jewish Policy Center wrote on X: “If Gaza Christians believe Israel will not conduct its war in Gaza City, they are mistaken. They have implanted themselves in a battlefield. They are part of the battle. If they are looking for martyrdom, well…”
The Washington, D.C.-based organization is prominent and includes a number of notable public figures on its board of fellows, including Michael Medved, Norman Podhoretz, and Dennis Prager.
Khalil Sayegh, a Palestinian Catholic who studied human rights at the Catholic University of America, said the group’s statement targeted Christians. Sayegh’s sister and father both died in Gaza.
“The Washington-based ‘Jewish Policy Center’ is calling for the killing of Christians,” Sayegh wrote, “including priests and nuns, who refuse to leave their churches.”
Hours later, Sayegh noted in a separate post that the Center “deleted this egregious post in which they incite violence against Christians in Gaza and call for their killing.”
The organization “still refuses to apologize, apparently seeing nothing wrong with endorsing the killing of Christians,” he added. “I’m grateful to know that this despicable organization, and those who stand behind it, do not represent the Jewish community — despite appropriating its name.”
The organization did not respond to CatholicVote’s requests for comment.
According to its website, the Jewish Policy Center “passionately supports a strong American defense capability, U.S.-Israel security cooperation, and missile defense. We support Israel in its quest for legitimacy and security.”
