Earlier this week, Russia called for a swift UN Security Council meeting in light of the recent arrest of a Ukrainian man in Italy. This individual, who was apprehended in the Rimini region a week ago, is allegedly tied to the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines that occurred in the Baltic Sea back in September 2022. Blasts, measuring 2.1 and 2.3 on the Richter scale, caused significant damage to the pipelines designed to transport Russian gas directly to Germany—one was reportedly full at the time of the incident. However, Moscow has consistently accused Germany and neighbouring nations of stalling the investigation and sidelining Russia from the inquiry. Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky took to Telegram, expressing, “We will emphasise the delays in the German investigation and the lack of transparency,” noting that a meeting had been arranged earlier this week.

Last Thursday, Italian authorities apprehended a Ukrainian citizen, later named by various media as Sergey Kuznetsov, a former military officer. Prosecutors assert that he played a role in organising a team that rented a yacht (Andromeda) and deployed explosives on the pipelines using commercial diving equipment. Meanwhile, German investigators are reportedly leaning towards the belief that a small group of Ukrainians orchestrated the attack—an assertion Moscow has dismissed as “ridiculous.” Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that the United States might have played a hand in the sabotage. Last year, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service even claimed to possess “credible information” indicating that US and British agents were involved in the operation.

Investigative reports from German outlets ZEIT, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and ARD have revealed some puzzling developments in the ongoing case of the Ukrainian commando unit allegedly linked to the Nord Stream sabotage. Reportedly, authorities have identified all six alleged members involved and issued arrest warrants for them. However, a twist emerged in a report published by ZEIT on August 27, 2025, revealing a seventh individuals believed to have played a role in the operation, suggesting that this group included four divers, an explosives expert, a skipper, and the detained Serhii K. According to the report, the seventh individual, Yevhen U, reportedly joined the commando at a later satge, between September 19 and 23, 2022. It is alleged that the German officials managed to trace his journey from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea.
More allegations are made in the report, suggesting that Yevhen U was originally part of another team that aimed to sabotage the Turk Stream Offshore pipeline, through which Russia delivers gas to southern Europe. The report suggests that the attack on the e TurkStream Offshore Gas pipeline was unsuccessful, and it’s believed Yevhen U might have been carrying some of the explosives himself, which ZEIT sees as a potential explanation for the unusual circumstance of two dives occurring about 80 kilometres apart. According to the report, Yevhen U. has not responded to requests for comments, while his wife insists that he has remained in Ukraine since the onset of the war.
Zeit’s investigative report leaves us with some puzzling questions, especially the ones regarding Yevhen U’s return journey from the TurkStream diving site, located over 1,000 km away from the RDV point in Poland, all while hauling a trunk loaded with explosives (HMX). This daring delivery to the Andromeda crew on September 19 at the Kolbrzeg port in Poland raises eyebrows, especially considering that Yevhen U allegedly crossed the Polish border transporting HMX without a hitch. The reports also do not provide details about Yevhen U and the “second crew” operational plan to take out the TurkStream Offshore pipelines in the Back Sea, which lie within Russian and Turkish waters at a depth as low as 2,200 meters below the surface. Was a submarine involved? What are the names of the second crew’s operatives?
Some of the elements provided by the Zeit’s report are in direct contradiction with the exotic Polish intelligence narrative, which describes the Andromeda crew as tourists on holiday. While there is little doubt about the Polish Authorities’ involvement in the disappearance of the Kołobrzeg harbour videos, and their subsequent assistance in the escape of Volodymyr S to Ukraine, it is rather surprising that the German outlet has made no effort to explain why the US third Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LDH-3), who has long been suspected by resarchers to have been involved, in some capacity, with the Nord Stream sabotage, was moored in the port of Gdynia, in Poland, on the same day (19/09/2022). What a coincidence! Why have the mainstream media never looked into NATO’s maritime activities during the US-led naval exercise BATOPS 22 held in June 2022, and the German-led Northern Coasts 2022 (NOCO22) held in September 2022? Why was the possibility of a submarine involvement in the Nord Stream sabotage ever explored, even though the blast sites are located in the “NATO Lake,” and a well-established NATO submarine training area controlled by Germany’s Submarine Operation Authority (SubOpAuth)?
The ongoing developments are certainly drawing interest, but there appears to be an increasing and justified scepticism surrounding the Ukrainian narrative, as well as growing concerns regarding Poland’s nonchalance and unwillingness to cooperate with the investigators. What are they hidding? Many, including Russian officials, seem to be leaning towards the idea that the Ukrainian Scenario may be nothing more than a distraction—in other words, a “Red Herring” meant to obscure the identity and provenance of the real culprits behind the Nord Stream sabotage…

Russia ‘has no faith’ in German Nord Stream sabotage probe
Berlin seems to be covering up former US President Joe Biden’s possible role in orchestrating a terrorist attack, a Russian envoy has argued.
The German authorities are attempting to cover up the true circumstances of the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions by blaming private “scapegoats,” Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Monday.
Earlier this month, a Ukrainian veteran was arrested in Italy at Germany’s request on suspicion of belonging to a small group of operatives allegedly behind the industrial sabotage in the Baltic Sea.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Polyansky criticized what he described as a lack of transparency from German officials and frequent leaks to the press. He argued that Germany and its allies are steering public opinion toward a narrative in which “amateur” operatives driven by personal motives carried out the blasts, thereby clearing governments of any involvement.
“We have no faith in Berlin’s findings,” Polyansky said. “We urge the German authorities not to try to hide the truth behind a veil of secrecy, but to demonstrate a willingness to engage in genuine cooperation and reveal all the information at their disposal.”
He reminded the council that media reports about the yacht Andromeda and rogue Ukrainian operatives first surfaced in 2023, after US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh alleged that President Joe Biden’s administration orchestrated the attack. Hersh’s claims, Polyansky said, aligned with expert assessments that the operation required nation-state resources. The US has rejected the journalist’s accusations.
Polyansky described the theory promoted in Western media as resembling a spy novel, adding that it conveniently distracts from the possibility that the sabotage – which “directly harmed German economic and political interests” – could have been carried out by a NATO ally.
The Nord Stream pipelines were built to transport Russian natural gas directly to Germany. After the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022, Berlin ended imports of Russian energy, ending decades of reliance on the fuel for economic growth.
