A shocking scandal has rocked Melbourne, Australia, after a 28-year-old trainee doctor was accused of secretly filming hundreds of female colleagues in hospital bathrooms over the course of several years.
Ryan Cho, who worked at Austin Hospital, is facing more than 130 charges, including stalking, producing intimate images, and installing hidden surveillance devices, according to multiple outlets including ABC News and News.com.au.
Authorities allege Cho hid cameras in bathrooms across three major medical facilities — Austin Hospital, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital — starting in 2021. Investigators reportedly uncovered around 4,500 explicit photos and videos of alleged victims on Cho’s electronic devices, with police estimating there are at least 450 victims so far.
Cho was arrested on July 10 after a hospital employee allegedly discovered a cell phone secretly recording in a bathroom. Following his arrest, police seized multiple devices believed to have been used to store and record the illicit footage.
Despite the disturbing allegations, Cho was granted bail on Friday, August 22, under strict conditions set by a Victorian Supreme Court judge. Those conditions include a curfew, mandatory psychological treatment, and a ban from entering any hospital unless for a medical emergency. He must also live with his parents, who were ordered to pay a $32,000 surety, and has surrendered his passport.
Cho’s attorney, Julian McMahon SC, claims there is no evidence that his client distributed the material or physically threatened any of the victims. McMahon described Cho as “a complicated young professional man with what will eventually be understood as complex psychiatric issues together with criminal conduct.”
Cho has not yet entered a plea, and authorities believe there could be even more victims as the investigation continues.
